New flamenco initiative in Moron

FORO CULTURAL FLAMENCO
“MORÓN 2004”

THE FLAMENCO CULTURAL FORUM “MORÓN 2004”
HAS BEEN FOUNDED IN MORÓN DE LA FRONTERA

Last March 19th in the city of Morón de la Frontera (Seville) the FORO CULTURAL FLAMENCO “MORÓN 2004”, was founded as a non-profit organization which hopes to cover the cultural need of conserving the art of flamenco in this city.

Twenty-four founding members, including flamenco-followers and professional artists associated with flamenco, participated in the founding assembly wherein the statutes were unanimously approved and presented, to be duly entered in the Registro de Asociaciones de Andalucía last April 13th.

The FORO CULTURAL FLAMENCO “MORÓN 2004” comes into being with the intention of continuity, and hopes to fill a cultural vacuum via the collection and safe-guarding of this city’s flamenco heritage, supporting and projecting this heritage in order to contribute to the development and promotion of its values.

One of the FORO’s principal objectives is the creation of a Flamenco Cultural Center where a Program of Activities can be developed and implemented, not only among the citizens of Morón, but within the flamenco community at large. Activities designed to promote and support professionals and local amateurs, uncover new talents and encourage study and investigation of the history of flamenco in Morón de la Frontera will be the backbone of the Program.

The necessary steps have been taken to formally request the use of adequate premises to serve as headquarters for the Cultural Center where relevant material may be exhibited and the Program of Activities be developed.

Preparations are under way for the official presentation of the FORO to the media to be announced in the near future.

Just curious. Is this a Diego del Gastor cult thing or Moron flamenco in the more general sense?

Andy, as official spokesperson for the Moron forum, accept an emphatic NO. This is a group of aficionados and active professionals (the latter represented by Dieguito de Moron and Pepe Torres whom many of you saw when he toured the US last year with Juana Amaya and Farruquito), aged 30-ish to 50-ish who are sincerely interested in protecting and preserving flamenco in Moron in all of its manifestations, past, present and future. In the five or six meetings we've had, I don't remember the name "Diego del Gastor" coming up at all, and in fact the only modification made to the association's constitution was the removal of an oblique reference to the American interest in Morón that was triggered by Don Pohren's books. We all agreed it was best not to harp on that strange flash in the pan. We're also trying to avoid abusing the word "pasado" (the past) to make sure people understand this is a not a dusty historical society but a dynamic effort to support traditional flamenco.

At a meeting held a few days ago we talked about starting up mini-festivals in the different neighborhoods of Morón, kind of flamenco block parties, and began making plans for the official presentation of the Forum which will hopefully take place the end of June.

The municipal authorities have reacted favorably to financing a physical location for the association, and this was the most important obstacle.

Good luck with this Estela, sounds cool? Is there already a flamenco feria in Morón?

Hi Simon... Moron has the Gazpacho festival the end of July, and the feria in mid-September.

The flamenco forum is moving along quickly, we had a meeting tonight, lots of plans.
