Peteneras

I think this is the epitome of flamenco:

Not only do I want to marry the dancer, but the palo itself is very cool.
I have quite a few books with transcriptions and rarely do I see this one included. Why is that?

I have a flamenco palo tree in one books, it says peteneras has fromed from sigiriyas. So I would assume the the compas is very similar.

Anyone know anything about it?

I think this palo is to be played at funerals--so it is bad luck to play anywhere else.

You might be able to find it through a search of this site.

Saura's Flamenco! I have that DVD -- highly recommended. Every performance on that DVD is absolutely pure gold.

It figures that the guitar player in that video is Jose Antonio Rodriguez -- he's one of my favorites, and he is SSSOOOOO technical, absolutely brilliant.

My favorite performance that I've found of Jose is

Might just be my favorite farruca ever.

I saw this film a long time ago. And I couldn't find a DVD, there is only PAL VHS on amazon. Where did you get the DVD?

And all flamenco is supposed to have come out of sadness and misfortune as a form of expressing these things. So peteneras isn't that far out by itself, I heard this bad luck thing. Not superstitious.

I got the DVD from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Flamenco-Paquera-Jerez/dp/B0000DIJOT/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1207582869&sr=8-1

If you have a problem with the link, you can search for Carlos Saura Flamenco.

Almost skipped this thread.

To gipsies and even non gipsy flamencos, this palo is considered taboo and "bad luck", because supposedly a dancer died suddenly while performing it. Cafe de Chinitas by lorca is poplular, and based on peteneras too. Play that or anyother peteneras during a gipsy juerga and watch everyone scatter like you have some disease. LOL! Honestly, since my experience with voodoo many years ago, just to be safe, I avoid it myself. Some other taboos are Alborea if you are not gitano, and not at a wedding, and Villancicos if it ain't Christmas time.

That's funny. So I would assume in the movie link above, that dance is supposed to be tragic and funeral like?

It just sounds so dark and somber, I always liked music in minor keys. Most of my repertuar is that, except for one Alegrias, I don't know how that one got into me.

I was hoping there is a nice peteneras somewhere, except for Cafe. But that one will work. So what if I post it in the audio section?!?!?

RE: Peteneras (in reply to Bogdan1980

i was playing a petenera piece while sight reading it from tab, got the whole melody down and played it in succession. mid way a piece of coal in the fire exploded (literally) and a red hot lump of it went flying onto the carpet in front of me. my heart nearly stopped with the shock of it (imagine the feeling you get wacthing a scary film X 10)

i got really spooked cause i was the only person in the house, plus i never really believed in it cause i thought it was mumbo jumbo, i needed a Stiff jack daniels to calm the nerves after it.

I wonder if Andalucian Insurance Companies have an exclusion of cover to the playing of Peteneras, along with Acts of War, Riots, Civil Unrest, Act of God..etc?

cheers,

Ron

Ron - maybe you could ask MacBeth and Co insurance company in Reading for some guidance on this matter?

Yeah, in Spain life insurance companies must state in the fine print: In the case the death cause is accidental but is preceded by an excessive play of Peteneras, the accident is considered an act of God and therefore liability is transferred to the deceased, aka such deaths are not covered by this policy

Surely you mean, ahem, "The Scottish Play" Insurance Co. ?

Thanks for the tip, Ricardo - it's useful to know these things. Somehow Paco Peña's been getting away with playing peteneras in concert for decades - maybe he has enough mojo to give him immunity. (And there's usually no fireplace on stage).

It's actually called "The Lumphanan Insurance Society" now...
They will not insure you if you are not "born of woman".
So I guess Mr.Spock would not get Life Assurance and would probably have difficulty in getting even House or Car insurance too.

Actually, Lumphanan is a village just about 25 miles from me.

cheers,

Ron

Its so superstitious, nearly everything is bad luck here. A gypsy asked me for a lighter to light his cigarette. I didnt have one so I offered him a candle...which he refused because it was bad luck.
Then I took my guitar out of its case and left the case open, which I was told was also bad luck.
Later a dancer left her shoes outside so I brought them in and put them on a table. The dance teacher ran up to them and threw them at me because it was bad luck.
Thats why half the people run around with rosaries and rabbits feet.

I was at a paco pena concert in Norwich about 10 years ago when an elderly member of the audience died during the petenera!!

Talking of superstition (in reply to Bogdan1980

Reading this thread, my dog puked all her meal on the floor. My sister started running away and I was the only one left to clean the mess up...
