My worst nightmare come true! (feat.??)

Ok I put this in off topic because I dont really think it belongs in the general section and last time it got brought up Flo ended up leaving the Forum, an axe murdering lunatic was booed off the forum and I got repremanded by admin for identity theft.

....saying all that, and at the risk of poking another stick in this particular wasps nest, I will begin my tale.

The day started off with a simple phone call whist I was happily asleep in bed at around midday. It had been a long night and I could not remember the name of the last night club that I had been to with an Israeli belly dancing friend who had a birthday party along with a gaggle of her 20 something year old belly dancing friends.
"Diga?" I groaned.
It was my friend the wedding planner. Every year I am asked to play for various weddings with unusual requests from wearing strange outfits to learning pieces of music that you should never have to play on the flamenco guitar (like the birdy song for example). Every wedding is different in location, audience etc and some couples spend a whole year going through every miniscule detail about the piece of music they want when the bride goes down the aisle, when everyone leaves the church, when the champagne is served, when the cake is cut etc.etc.
"please come down to the office. The couple want to talk to you about the musical items"
Having done this a few times now, and knowing that most people dont know that much about spanish guitar music (let alone flamenco) you can steer it generally along the lines of Pachelbels canon for the congregation, "Romanza anonima" for bridal march, maybe Barrios as an interlude and an Alegria for closing the ceremony.

However today I got an extra special request. The bride told me how she really connected with the spirit of the spanish guitar and that she had been listening to Flamenco for many years in England and she really really....REALLY wanted to me play...

(this is for you Flo)

... a couple of compositions by the great spanish meastro...Juan Martin!
"Would that be at all possible? It would really make the day complete."

I mean....how do you get out of that one?....and now I have to listen to this stuff and learn it. I wanted to hold my head and blurt out in the office NOOOO!!!!
but instead i smiled and said that it might be too tricky but I would see what I could do. I cant go to sleep, I am still sweating....for the love of all that is sweet and holy how do i get out of this without having to stage a horrid accident?

lol, so what will you play ? what she gave you a recording or something ?

you should be glad, imagine if she had been listening to Paco in england and wanted you to learn 2 or 3 new pieces from his latest album in a week

hahahaha lol

Well you can tell her that you tried to learn the compositions of Juan Martin, but you realized that they are simply too difficult for you. Then tell her that you are able to play little bit easier stuff from another guitarist , called Paco de Lucia who is not so good as Juan Martin but almost the same style

Tee Hee....thats kind of what happened. The bride only had a cassette recording of the pieces and i was like "oh you need to make mp3s and send them to me"
and " Oh I think they need too much preparation" when my wedding planner friend put her big foot in her even bigger mouth by saying
"the best known player in Spain is Paco de Lucia" (thus stating her her complete knowledge on the subject of flamenco) and then"...pimientito knows how to play most of his pieces"
If you want to help....please SHUT UP!! Because now I had to explain why I cant do Paco at the wedding either (except "El tempul"- and you said it wouldnt come in useful Flo )

Maybe you can play something that sounds similar? Are you sure she would notice the difference? No wait i have it.... you play whatever you like and then tell her that this is from JM's newest CD or so. Or wait this is better... you play something which you say you learned from a workshop with Juan. This way she will never find out the truth.

Play Juan Martin for goodness sake and leave all this **** snobbery to all the elitist phony intellectuals and Republicans or risk turning into a chick with fake boobs and an orange tan. Hell man Juan Martin is not the antichrist, ToddK is.

That must have hurt REALLY BAD to say. I've never had to deal with this situation before. I think in this case I'd say"yes I know one or two" and end up playing one of Juan's pieces along with one of PDL's pieces and fill the rest with my own repertoire.

If you have the time though just learn as much Juan Martin stuff as you can. Heck, when I'm being paid I'll play "Spanish Romance" and repeat it once or twice when the old folks get all excited about it...

Gee....thats a tough choice.
BTW without any elitist snobbery there would never be any discussions or arguments on the forum at all!

JohnO, you really put yourself in that office. It was difficult to stay composed.
The difference is I guess everyone has to learn spanish romance at some point and everyone knows that it means getting well paid or getting a big tip.
....AHH I have it....Juan martin recorded a rumba of the Spanish romance...I can just do that!!!

so not only did mine come out patchy and uneven but i put too much on and went very orange , ork sent me home cause they tghout i had some kind of kidney infection or contagious skin desease, i was just about to correct them , when i stoped for a sec , tghout about it and out of nowhere replied:
" Yes you know, mibe i do have a kidney infection, i dont feel too good.. i best go home, see a doctor "

If you're able to play it properly, then do it. If not,....well it that case I might understand your frustration.

I try to make it clear for wedding gigs What I will do or not, including sound, time of playing, dress, and music of course. I often get requested tunes that are not our style or whatever, I simply say "sorry no". I have not been turned down the gig for that yet. In the worst cases, the bride so sweet and nice you feel bad, I may actually learn a little bit of the melody and stick it at the beginning of a rumba or something then improvise the rest medly into other songs. You know, not more than aboutt 20 seconds of the actual song. Usually they are over joyed by just that little bit...and give a tip.

Here in the US I have never once been asked for Juan Martin. Ottmar yeah, G. Kings of course, Alex Fox, and the standard Spanish and Mexican songs of course. Still waiting for the "El Tempul" request.

yeah thats always a favourite, like they ever listen past the catchy repeating melodyes anyway, id acctualy like to experiment once and just play something absoluteley completley different and tell them it was what they requested, many times its just the nylon strings alone that create they idea of what the song was.

I have a good , funny gig storry, this is acctually ALo's, but yous better lough at this one, noone aknolodged my last story and it ****ing took me 20 minutes to writte

There was this Chain of Take Away Portugese restaurants that have opened here Nandos, now beeing portugese, they decided to use flamenco to promote it as you do.

since it was about 8 branches it was a long commitment, it was pretty good money so we said yes, I did some (well one lol) Alo did some..

The Job involved playing in the restaurant, while a guy outside was circulling around in a chicken suit and handing out flyers.lol

some of the gigs were in the worst neigbourhoods, on weeknights, on crappy sound, so the reastaurants where emthy, mibe 4 people in at the same time , but we got paid no matter what.

the money was only ok if you only used 2 people, so it was a guitarist an dancer most of the time.
The funny thing happened to ALo.

he said He did this Crazy , Emotional , Solea with a dancer, and ended on a busy rasqueado at the end, full of energy, the guitar mixed with the feet at a fast speed (u know how it goes ) and came to the Finalle, Dancer Did one of those grand finalle !!

and Alo said he heard errupting applause, so he looks up to aknoledge it, he says when he did!!!, the sound was coming form a guy that was beating the bottom of his Tomato sauce bottle, to get it on his plate, who hadent even noticed that the Dance stoped lol.

brilliant

hey i am looking at my storry as i wrotte it, it might not sound as funny writen down but the way he told it.. was hillarious ...serious ...it really was.

Its true about knowing 30 second sound bites. I have lost count of the number of times that people asked me to play Rodrigos Concierto d'Aranjuez (although more usually they ask for "you know....the Rodrigo Orange juice one"). I used to ask which of the 3 movements they wanted or simply explain that I didnt have my orchestra with me...but actually they just want to hear the first dozen bars from the 2cd movement. Forget about the cadanza and finale. Play that theme twice with a bit of rasgeo at the end and the whole restaurant/wedding reception bursts into applause.

I once spent a month learning a theme for a wedding that in the end was cut short after 30 seconds for a speech!

JEJEJEJE
That is HILARIOUS. I only wish that the guy had been wearing the chicken outfit too....and why was a portugese restauarant chain playing flamenco instead of fado?
However it is a lesson in choosing your establishments carefully. (without trying to sound too snobby) More expensive restaurants generally have more appreciative audiences, especially for solo flamenco or classical guitar. However if the money is good you sometimes just have to think of it as a paid rehearsal.

true we normally do, but this what the first ever appearence of this restaurant in our city, none of us knew what to expect, they spent alot of money into launching it.

we figured...portugese restaurant...good money, eazy work...cant be that bad.

the way it was sold to us, it was gonna be the next big popular thing, the week before i saw photos in the paper about the opening party, with town personalities etc..

so they had alot of money, just not much of a plan, there was noone there to entertain.

but noone could have predicted it since there was no reference.

The answer is simple. You tell her if she wants his compositions she should hire him.

I've played at many weddings, so there is no novelty at being paid to play at one. So for me it would be a matter of money. I doubt they'd be willing to pay enough money to spend time learning one of his tunes. If they were, I'd learn it, if not then I wouldn't. Ricardo has good advice as well, just give them a tatse of it. That should be enough. Depends on how bad you want the gig. Doit has the right idea too, IMO.

Oh well, people want what they want, they say what they say and they do what they do. You've got to figure that you're in the business of entertaining people and it's that way for every musician on some level. Either you make it clear what you do like Ricardo said, or you put up with it. You cannot run your buisness expecting that anyone cares about what is flamenco or what your tastes are at all. It's about their tastes, and if you don't want to deal with it you're not connecting with what they see is your purpose, and that is to entertain them. It's work, and if you can see pleasure in it that's great, but don't think it's not a job when you take the job. You will do a great job if you perform and you learn this valuable lesson. Otherwise you'll not be playing for anyone but you. And that's when a gig really sucks! And that's what you want to avoid. There is nothing in greater in performing than the pleasure on an audience....

Juan Serrano did too I think... 'Romancing the rumba' or something like that... you should start with the classic-style Romance for the old folks, then segue into the 4/4 version, thrashing the last few rumba chords out in a way to make uncle Juan proud!
