Ron,
I've been told one of the biggest differences between budget guitars and luthier ones is that the latter are setup! This makes some sense, because usually when you play at a guitar shop the action is too high and it doesn't feel good. Is that because the guitars aren't any good or because they have old, cheap strings and need to be set up? I don't know, but I have a feeling almost any guitar needs to be set up. And your preferences may change over time. I read Tom Whiteley say that he recently changed to medium tension strings on the recommendation of Juan Serrano... talking about new tricks!

So do I and I love it. I am learning after all, not performing in Jerez or recording in Madrid. A new set of Savarez today and my Bernal (with rosewood fingerboard) rocks. I wore out the old set on my vacation and yes, I am back in the UK with a lesson from Emilio Maya under my belt. What a nice guy and excellent guitarist/teacher. I will be back for more.

Maybe guitars are like cars...you get one that you can afford and that you like. Maybe you need a commuter, maybe a collector's item. If you are a race car driver, you'll need something with more horses.

No real problems with my techniques to date, he was impressed I had so much with so few lessons.

In short, he concentrated on one thing.... compas. "Stay within the compas Simon, not outside it".

He showed me a few more tangos chords and we jammed an energetic Solea por Bulerias which went well as I can play some pretty quick falsetas now and Emilio can play some very fast, beautiful falsetas.

He is a nice guy, speaks some English when needed and I will be going back. Kate kindly arranged the lesson and it cost me 30 Euros.
