dominic and string theory

personally, string theory for me, is a complex issue.

it involves alot of real personal biases and opinions. also theres the theological aspects.

for example, i really like my luthier sets. but the basses just go real fast and they don't get a good classical tone. it makes it hard to play stuff for school and do flamenco

my hannabachs just die. bam. sound great for two days, then they crap out. and they are inconsistent with intonation.

labella...... right. wouldnt know which ones to buy lol. plus, i think black trebles are... silly looking ???

savarez... the non rectified ones are crsip and dry, but the basses make me unhappy. the trebs are close to where i'd like to be... unless i got a few freak sets.

i wish i had some inkling of what to do next. those are the four major brands i know of that make an acceptable flamenco string....

however, and i feel highly conflicted about this, i have been using these d'addario composite sets... they have a very round top end, but the g is an interesting cofffee colored material. it has a very delightfully dusty bone-dry tone that just says "you can play this string open and it will sound good"

the basses are okay, they age well, actually they sound better after about a day and a half.

here is my string theory:

they all suck. we will never be happy with just buying a set and throwing them on as is. even getting close to satisfaction is going to cost in excess of 20 dollars and thats likely to involve multiple sets, or llarge bulk orders of single strings.

when we do find a combination that works, we will order large numbers of it, and find that the factory they are made in has changed since you last bought a set, and the new product is crap. thus you will have 30 sets of useless ilifeless strings.

WHAT DO WE DOO????????? i'm soooo lookign for a good combination for my negra. what do you guys do? maybe even start a thread in the audio section so we can hear the combos... that'd be a real treat!

really? i found out of all the brands they last the longest. but just recently they have been snapping on me within a couple of days, maybe a bad batch is going round. i just tried la bella black trebles for the first time, so far so good. we need samwise or ricardo or someone like that in here to discuss the real 'string theory' (of which i have NO IDEA about)

You haven't written anything negative about the D'Addario Composites, have you?

Have you tried the D'Addario Pro Arte? They are cheaper and last very long. They are advertising that Paco Pena uses them.

And yes Luthier basses are not very long lasting

Have to agree with you there Georg.

I've tried every string under the sun trying to find a perfect string for my new guitar - particularly like Luthiers. Savarez are OK.

However, I used to really dislike D'addario Pro Arte. They used to sound quite unpleasant on my old guitar. However, stuck a set of reguler EJ45s on a month back and the guitar came alive. I don;t think I would use anything else now. Plus, they really keep their tone longer than other brands...

However, I really think these things also depend on many factors - your guitar, nail length, general mood, position of the moon, etc....

Best thing is to have a "**** you" attitude with your stirngs. Just stick any old nylon strings on and force them sound good!

My theorie is that all these string manufacturers are involved in a conspiracy of some rich
classic guitar players against our flamencoworld.

This is a plot against flamenco guitarists, believe me.
They know that we need fresh sounding basses and not this dull classic sound which they like.
So they intentionally build basses which die and go dull after few days and they laugh their a.ss off when we have to change them and buy strings again and make them richer and richer.

I would vote for a boycott against all of them. Lets build our own strings.
First step would be a pilot project. We have many luthiers, engineers, etc. in the foro.
I bet there is a way to build everlasting flamenco basses!!

Ok this idea wouldnt make anyone rich here lol
It would be working in an honorary capacity.
But we would be heros for all flamencos for many generations

Well it took me til a couple of weeks ago to work out that hard tension strings sound more flamenco so I can't really comment on the complexities of string theory (though I understand this one more than the other string theory).

Would be good to start making our own though - we could kidnap cats and do it the traditional way...

oh, everyone knows you mustn't look at your strings, it's causing a disruption in the quantum wave function.

A fresh set of savarez corum medium tension is what i like best so far, but they're too expencive for me, so i use luthiers medium set. my experience is that the luthier basses die faster, so i can't tell which string gives the most value.. . but I'm ready to settle for any decent string, the moon phase, daily shape or fingers and mood stuff still drown the string tone character for me. do you guys have any tips on where to order for a good bulk price (in europe)?
