The only smoker in the village

Excuse the rant - I'm back home drunk.

A friend who lives in the back of beyond dragged me off to a Village Hall dinner - some of you English guys might know what that's all about!

It was surprisingly good. Tables were groaning with fine food and puddings to die for. Wine was flowing freely and all for £6 a head AND we did quite well in the quiz.

On 3 occasions however, I felt the urge to step outside. Now usually, when that happens, I can huddle in a doorway with new-found friends, but this time I was all alone. Not a dog-end in sight.

What's going on?

Ah...thats brings back memories. Blue rinse and bingo in a drafty nissan hut.
I havent been back to England since the smoking ban but i am forced to go this weekend to Liverpool of all places to play for a friends 40th birthday. Will be interesting to see the changes.
Smoking is banned in Spain too (except in establishments where the owner permits it)
....which is nearly all of them, so I guess it will be a while before we find smoke free tablaos in Andalucia.

This IS a trip down Memory Lane. I have fond memories of Liverpool.

Back in the late 60s I was on a "Field trip" in the Lakes with a bunch of teenagers from Kirby - I wasn't that much older than them and had to share a room with the girls. The first morning I was wakened with "Ey Madam (they were very respectful), dere's bugs in dese bunks, dey've bin bitin all night".

Because my job seemed to be to peel potatoes all day, I'm ashamed to say I only lasted 3 days and snuck off to hitch a lift back to college. It took a long, long time to find a road and spot any traffic, but I finally made it with not too many horrors on the journey. It would be difficult for girls to do that sort of thing these days.

Yeah, technically you cant smoke in any public place like trains, planes, stations etc. However airports have these smoking zones which is just a red square painted on the ground with an ash tray in the middle and an extractor above it. Invariably there are 50 people trying to squeeze into the smoking zones for a pre or post flight fag.
Restaurants and bars have banned smoking unless the bar is less than 100 meters square, then the owner can decide whether to permit smoking or not.
Since most bars are less than 100 square meters, and the owner doesnt want to lose business, you can smoke in them.
Large bars and restaurants have actually built partition walls in them to make the lounges smaller and permit smoking in at least one half of the establishment.

Oh it's a shock. We spent two weeks standing outside pubs in the rain. It was such a relief to come home, never mind the price, around £6 a packet.

I saw an advert on the local TV for a flamenco bar in Neptuno that had a no smoking policy, which was surprise. Beofre the smoking ban it was not unusual to see people smoking as they walked round the supermarket, teachers smoking while they escorted children round town, policeman smoking while directing traffic, bank cashiers having a smoke while they served you, and the worst was the students smoking in 16th century university buildings, stubbing them out on the marble. I had a professor who used to smoke in his lectures but the most surreal sight was people smoking while bathing in the sea !!

lol in america smoking doesnt happen too frequently in banks lol.

in illinois teheres going to be a statewide smoking ban. much to my relief, try playing a gig in a chicago jazz club, even a smoker will have a hard time breathing lol

I think my strangest flamenco moment was at the Biennal in Sevilla - the smokers couldn't wait for intermission and lit up in the box seats at Teatro de Maestranza. What can I say - it was a juerga!

Germany just passed put the non-smoking law into effect in some states including my area. I'm soooooo glad I quit three years ago. I would have hated to be forced not to smoke in restaurants and bars.

I started smoking at 13. After 15 years of smoking 2 packs a day I finally kicked the habit and have no urges whatsoever. I consider myself lucky, I know how tough it is.

Funny is, now in Germany some owners are turning their bars into "Smoking Clubs" making it legal. I'm wondering if it'll become a trend...
