A taxing question

Boring I know, but there are a number of foro members who are either Spanish, live in Spain or have a property there.

We pay non residence tax @ 18 Euros per year. There are four of us so 72 Euros per year is still not a sum to make us cry! Of course we do not mind paying this tax. The Gestoria then adds their charges which takes the grand total to 350 Euro.

In our opinion 288 Euros is excessive just to pay this tax on our behalf.

My question is.... can we arrange to make these payments ourselves at a bank or perhaps a local town hall and avoid paying the Gestoria these costs?

I have asked the people in the Gestoria can we pay these taxes ourselves but have been informed that we have no choice.

I really would prefer the whole amout to go towards running costs or the up keep of local services etc.

I would welcome your thoughts or experiences.

We are residents so this tax does not apply to us but suggest you go to the Hacienda and ask them there how/where to pay or how to set up a direct debit. It does seem ridiculous that your gestor charges so much simply to pay a bill which I am sure you can do yourself. Our gestor runs around for us like mad and doesn't charge this much. He does our vat returns every three months and only charges about 40 euros. I dont know where you are based but it does seem excessive. If there is no way you can pay yourself at the Hacienda I'd shop around for another gestor.

Suerte

Kate

Thanks Kate,

I am in Spain next week so intend to sort a few things out.

Thanks for taking the time to offer me this advice. Will let you know how I get on.

You should be able to open a Spanish bank account and pay by annual debit. That is how my local taxes (property, council etc.) are paid. My lawyer set it up. I would ask at your town hall.
