the rain in spain on the plain

Last friday we had the most almighty storm in andalucia, huge, some places look like world war 3, mud slides, cars floating around, hillsides removed, I diced with death coming dowm from my workshop down a mountain road, on my scooter.. hit by hailstorms with golfball size stones at 125mph, (no kidding) and narrowly avoided being swept into a moving river of mud and boulders that suddenly appeared. The scooter went in and so did a bag of tools I was bringing down to my new workshop in town... but I escaped, only to be almost crushed by a concrete block wall that collapsed onto the car I was then sheltering in. Had a breeze block on my lap.! phew. 2 people died. The biggest storm since 1946. life in spain sure is exciting. Now we lie on the beach in warm september weather with half of andalucias bamboo floating around the bay. come for a visit, we'll put on a party.

In Cádiz, we were watching an openair showing of a Neil Young concert with a live blues concert scheduled afterwards when a spectacular lightning show began. As it increased in intensity, attention gradually shifted from the film.

With the first enormous raindrops, everyone ran for cover. We had heavy rain and hail for most of the night, but the news the following (sunny) day revealed that Cadiz escaped and placed to the north around Marbella suffered. Worse still is that the wonderful fruit crop of Nerja (mangos and chirimoyas) has been virtually destroyed, along with olive groves, potato fields etc.

That weather sounds crazy Stephen!! Glad you're ok after that!
How's the forecast for the next 2 weeks?
I'm off to Mojacar next Wednesday and hoping to get some colour in my cheeks.

We just arrived back from our apartment last night (13k from Mojacar). On Mojacar Playa on Monday it was 34 degrees and sunny - absolutely gorgeous weather. Hope it stays good for you next week.

Glad you made it out Stephen. We lost a lot of stuff in the valley but no deaths I think. Here's a photo of our little river from the bridge on the same day.

I was in nerja that day. The storm was almost biblical in proportion. The water was flowing in the streets like rivers and coming into the buildings. We were brushing water from the front door out to the back all morning at work. The hail destroyed every plastic greenhouse on that part of the coast.
The river burst its banks, flooded car parks , supermarkets, cars were taken out to sea along with trees,pavements and drainage pipes. Thousands of tonnes of earth carried out to sea as well. The damage was enormous. Took 5 hours to get back to granada
Hope we dont see the like of that again.

quite something. Just been to almunecar, what a mess, they are calling it a national disaster now. I still managed to get my teeth done at the dentict tho, with mud piled up outside.

Escribano- That looks like how the Rio Seco was in nerja.
Where is that photo taken. Was there really a road there too?

It used to be a stream draining into Lake Beznar in the Lecrín Valley, away from Restábal and Saleres.

There was a road, above and to the left. You can see what remains. I took this one the next morning. Sort of says it all, I think:

Hi Stephen,

Did you fill up the water tank at the workshop?

Hope there wasn't too much damage done - one item in particular springs to mind!!!!!!!!

Wow, thanks for posting the pics. We missed this one as we flew out to UK the day before. Aparantly here in Granada you had to roll up your trousers to the knees to cross the streets. And there we were complaining about the constant drizzle in Somerset/ Cardiff/ Birmingham/London, well ok everywhere and having to stand outside the pubs to smoke in the wet. We had no idea. Anyway got back my house not flooded and my plants all survived.

Now we are just worried about the rains in Vietnam where my brother lives.
