Very true "romerito"..... I could not agree more.
A large extent of the problem I feel is due to fact that Americans are so isolated.
For a country that is (yes, theoretically) suppose to be founded on differences and foreigners, vis a vis, melting pot, the society forces everyone to assimilate and become "American" whatever that is...from the very beginning commencing with the American Indians.
People do not realise that their differences are their strength. There is such excess. To such an extent it creates laziness and mental indolence.
When I read the news at times I say, Only in America.." Only in America would people force themselves to throw up food, buy gold plated running shoes, etc.
There is truly no other country like it. As much of a problem I had with it and the culture (or lack thereof), living abroad (in Italy mind you, not the 3rd world, although it has its moments) I realize just how fortunate they/we are and how spoiled I am/was....
It is indeed the land of opportunity, flaws and all, and that is no lie...
But I digress.
Living in Europe now for 6 years (my the Euro is breaking my heart!) and having travelled over 30 countries, well, I could say you are spot on.
And did I mention the Japanese are fantastic lovers? <sigh><laugh>
My wife is Korean. A diamond, and smarter than I will ever be...but my oh my is it funny to see her when I mention Japan and tease on the above comment...so the war continues....
Anyway, what a funny first post..

As an American, I feel sort of insulted. I mean, I'd sooner consider myself a regular joe than an american. I don't have any flags, I don't sing national anthem, don't pledge my allegiance to anyone but myself, and I sure as hell can't stand our "president". and our legislature is filled with sociopaths and whores.
I admit that there's a huge amount of ****s here, and I can't stand it. I live in a town called wheaton, in the middle of the US. if you look in the guiness book of records you will find that wheaton has THE MOST CHURCHES PER CAPITA THAN ANY OTHER CITY ON THE PLANET. I am an atheist, and it sucks here. THis town is full of self indulgent narcissistic sheisters and bible bangers.
but really now, thanks for lumping me in with the less than 10% of the population that buys gold running shoes, carries stupid ****ing ugly dogs in their 8,000 dollar handbags and regularly vomits up food. Its not like they don't exist everywhere else
furthermore, I have found some of the most tolerant people out of any country i've ever been to here. I went to europe and was constantly scoffed at for being american.
so why is it that I can go anywhere and be respectful of their culture as best i know how, and they can still scoff at me and its "ok"? But, if someone from europe or asia comes here it's not ok for joe shmo to be mad when someone who doesn't speak english is holding up the line at the bank?
as for your comment about the american indians, americans aren't the only ones with bad reputations concerning natives. Columbus wasn't a hero either. In fact after giving them all herpes, siphyllis and enslaving them, he killied the entire indiginous populations of several islands, and continued enslaving more. The torture he put them thru was soo bad, that mothers would sooner kill their children than have them grow up in it.
don't act like cultural homogenization doesn't happen everywhere.
come on guys. America is a fast paced, ignorant, money driven society. But give the people more credit. after all, you don't have to live with it.

I first went to America about 20 years ago. I'd heard all the stereotypes about brash, loud people, and I was prepared not to like it. But I absolutely loved it!  Not only because, as a land it is wonderful (I was touring through some of the national parks), but because everyone was so helpful and friendly. Whereas in England people in service industries sometimes do the absolute minimum to help their customers, in America I felt people took a pride in their work, even if it was just making sandwiches in a bar. And when they said 'have a nice day', well yeah it's a cheesy cliche, but actually it was nice!! I've been back a couple of times since and I feel the same.
And so what if some of them think America is the centre of the world - it's not surprising - America is an amazing place.

Ailsa, I agree with you: Japan IS a nice place to visit, but it's not exactly paradise. Visitors have very little exposure to the underbelly of society, and as a 10-year resident, I can attest to the fact that Japan has a dark side most visitors never encounter. Though Japan has a reputation for exemplary courtesy, it's often superficial, and there are serious issues here with intrafamily violence (matricide, fratricide, etc.), sadistic murders, children killing other kids, and group bullying. And although many people here contend that me-ism (individualism) is to blame for the chaos, in my opinion, the group ego still dominates and can be even more destructive. Every society has its problems, and Japan is no exception - the problems are just better hidden.
