Cante and non-spanish speakers

I wonder if anyone else experiences this...

I've put a limited effort into learning spanish, and I have some basics down but I could totally learn more (I have nothing for get-around-town and survival in spain) but I know a bit of the structure and learning is partly internalized away from my natural english (ie.. direct modifying adjectives coming after nouns, etc)...

but the point is... I cannot understand cante, and unless I just sit back and enjoy the general sound of flamenco with singing, I cannot listen to cante and absorb the music for learning and practice. I'm more into the guitar soloing because it's the most immediately accessible part (for non-spanish speaking Tom).

I'd like to be able to actually understand the singing in order to better appreciate the culture of flamenco expression, plus then it'd make me much more excited with listening to all the recordings and learn.

I'm toying with the possibility of moving to Spain within the next year or two, if the company I work for has locations in Spain (UK yes, Spain I dunno).

This is more of a thought-on-paper post, but has a bit of a "anyone here feel the same way?" aire to it.

I want to sing! Can I sing english verses and call it flamenco without being scoffed at?

Can't help with Spanish but this weekend an article on cante will be posted on my website. Won't help language but will give some insight into poetry characteristics.

Look on Sunday evening(USA time...)

Good Luck with your job...

I will check it out.
btw, my job is basically computer maintenance. blaaah...

Sweet!

... btw, I checked, and the company I work for (Staples) has a location in Faro, Portugal. It's about 100km from there to Huelva, then beyond is Sevilla and Jerez and Cadiz.

Hey Nemo Nint, I am a native spanish speaker from the Caribbean and sometimes it's difficult for me to grasp some of the "cante". If you had the "letras" it'll be much easier. Practice makes perfect so keep it up!
