Congratulations Stephen! That must be a thrill to build for the maestro himself. How I envy you this experience.

Stephen, how about some details. Blanca? negra? scale? how did this come about. Good for you!

The is an amusing anecdote about the day that El Maestro arrived at Gerundino´s house to try his guitars. He was attended by Eladio, who was, more or less, Gerundino´s business manager When he had selected a guitar, Eladio insisted that he should pay at least the cost of the materials. El Maestro paid the quantity required and left saying "esta el la primera guitarra que yo pago".

RE: paco de lucia's new guitar (in reply to stephen hill

Well, I thought that would start a stir!!
The instrument in question(sorry guysand girls) is a marvelous invention... a Practise guitar for when Paco goes on holiday and cant be bothered to take a large one (as if he needs to practise when he is on holiday)
Thin solid cedrela body, frets set to the first 6 at 660mm scale, peg head and half the body with bridge on the lower end...
Yes, it is a gift from the guitarist and itinerant flamenco player Mike Jingle here in Andalucia who knows him well. Aparantly Paco fell in love with Jingles one and asked where he could get one.. so . its a commission!
Great for the left hand and rasgueado practise. Wont disturb his neibours, thats the main thing....
We go and see him and present it. Engraved on the back ' Al Maesro Paco, gracias por su arte que ha cambiado mi vida, jingle xx' etc or something like that.

Paco phoned Jingle recently and on the phone said 'Hola.. do you remember me, its Paco... ' and ' you still wear odd socks Jingle?'
so the bubble bursts. Might show him my latest guitar I am making too.. but he cant have it as it is a commission also.
Anyway I will post some pics!

Most top performers dont pay for their instruments. They are 'sponsered'. This is particlarly helpful when your party trick is smashing up guitars on stage.

Big congrats Stephen, get a photo when you meet him and say hi to Jingle from me and Harold.

Well, that's a funny idea! Paco disturbing the neighbours with his guitar playing.... Someone going at his door and ask him if he could please stop with making such noise
It goes without saying he can wake me any night to hear him play, so I can't imagine him disturbing people, but I guess he is just being thoughtful of other people.

Hi Stephen,

That's brilliant news for you - well done indeed!

Strangely enough I was thinking of this type of guitar as well.
However, may start with a normal one in the meantime.

Perhaps PDL will order a standard-spec instrument on the back of this one!

Cheers,

Duncan Eduardo

Stephen, if I may ask, what would the cost of a commission like this be?

RE: paco de lucia's new guitar (in reply to stephen hill

When we lived next door to the Peña our neighbour was a policeman. One day Emilio was playing round at our house and I looked out to see the neighour in uniform hanging round outside looking up at our window. I popped my head out to ask if we were making too much noise. No he said , that's not noise that's Paco de Lucia. He thought we were playing CDs. His face was a picture when I said, no it's not a recording that's Emilio Maya playing live.

Anyway think we would all love to have Paco as a neighbour, even if only because that would mean we had a very large house in a very rich neighbourhood. A sound proof room would also be essential so we didn't disturb him with our 'noise' !!

Cant wait to get down to the coast Stephen, its hot and windy here and the sand is everywhere. If you have to have sand all over the place it is better to be on a beach.

Dear Tom
I would think the price would be about £400. I will post a picture in the next few days. The one I am doing is just like jingle's one but with a couple of small modifications, 6 frets instead of 5, otherwise on scales you end with 3 fingers not 4.
Any others I would do with my flamenco head, very nice! This one is simple, solid cedrela body and pegs. The engraving is going to cost him tho'!

Congratulations Stephen

That makes me even more motivated to make a guitarmaking course with you.
My ambition is, to build a great instrument for a great player one day as well. If god will, i'll manage that one day and even if not, i'll never give up the dream.
