Watch this if your ipod is only 1G

This vid brought a tear on my eye. I realised once again how happy I am.

Thanks Matic, that was great - I'm gonna show my kids - they don't even stack the dishwasher! We really are spoilt.

To be fair they do give a lot of their pocket money to charity. But that means they have pocket money! And food!! Yeah I'm gonna show them this right before lunch, then they'll appreciate that Tesco Value pizza.

A

PS my ipod is only 512mb, and I'm glad to have it.

Well i have no Ipod at all , just using cheap CD-Players all the time and every year or two, i buy a new one because these things have no quality nowadays...

I would be very critical with this video. Does it really want to say, the poorness of Asian/African kides comes from western or british teenagers who dont spend enough money on charity? Or because they are unhappy with their Ipods etc?

When most people think of justice, they claim "poorness for everybody!" and not "richness for everybody!". It is so easy to confront some unhappy guy with the slogan "it could be worse!", but this slogan doesnt solve one problem. And it could be also applied to the poor kids, in which favor it was actually intended to be spoken... totally counter-productive.

So i find that video very harmful. Maybe with good intentions, but if they took their own message for real, it would be very harmful... for ALL.

Hi Deniz, yes I see where you are coming from. Of course my kids giving pocket money to charity goes no way at all to solving any problems. But I do know it's so easy for them to get sucked into comparing what they have with others around them and feeling sorry for themselves, when in fact we live really privileged lives. That's all I meant.

This video has many aspects imo.
We know it's been made for a group of people who have a chance to watch it. That's us, that australian girl, those with life like ours. Those children and their poor african/asian parents won't see this video nor would they be able to understand it. So the target public are people who are able to HELP.
Firstly, the video should MAKE YOU THINK about your life. Secondly, it should make you COMPARE your life to those of poorer. Then, you should realize, that problems you face in everyday life are in most cases NOTHING compared to their problems.

You know the answer. No, this is not the intention of this video.
It is a reminder that we are not alone in this world and it should hit our head so we won't look just on our life and our fat asses since there's so many sh*it going on today.
quote:

When most people think of justice, they claim "poorness for everybody!" and not "richness for everybody!".

Neither of those two is good and wouldn't make people's lifes better.
The vid's message is not 'throw your ipods into trash, you don't need it' it just wants us to open our eyes once again. This is the first step to a better world. Opening your eyes.
quote:

And it could be also applied to the poor kids, in which favor it was actually intended to be spoken...

They wont see this video anyway.

So I can't agree with you.
But I see a harmful thing about this video. Or better said about such videos.
In my case (and I bet I'm not the only one) I have over years of confronting with videos of killing in Mideast became kind of immune on such acts. The news of a suicide bomber doesn't do me anything left. Why? You can hear such news everyday many times on all media. And in some time you just don't care anymore. Which is the worst thing that could happen. The same is with such videos.
Now it has a good effect on me. When it won't bring a tear on my eye anymore, then it's dangerous.

@Matic

But opening eyes doesnt feed one single kids stomach and to know that there is not only a western rich world, but also a poor world i dont need this movie too - we see it all in the news. And only because we do it daily we dont become ignorant towards it. We also eat daily...
And why you say it wouldnt be better if everybody were rich? It certainly would be better if everbody had not only something to eat, but also to drive or to watch or to listen.

quote:

I was just referring to the slogan "it could be worse".

The point is, if i want to help, i must confront myself with the reasons of poverty. Comparing lifes is not helpful for that. I could compare myself to a african child and consider myself in a good situation. I could compare myself to Donald Trump and can feel like a worm. And on top of that you can compare the life of the poorest man and you will always find a possible situation, which could be worse for him, and in which consideration his poor life seems afterwards not that poor.

@Alisa

I know, and i think its wrong to compare ones life with another, because it doesnt give any answer. For example: you could say: "poverty and richness, what an injustice (or privilege)!". But you could also say: "the privileged deserve to be privileged" (which implies, the poor deserve poverty, a liberal statement; but am not saying this!). It depends all on the standpoint. If your privileged and you have something to loose you will probably tend to the latter statement, if your poor and want something, to the first.

In general:

I think the intention of this movie is to create empathy with poor people, so that the listener spends the money on charity. It is directed to western people, because they are the only one who HAVE money. By comparing the life of a seemingly average teenager to poor 3rd wordl kids, it tries to make fun of or caricate the problems of the teenager. No matter how unimportant her problems are, this is a mean method. AS IF it would need a caricature of a western teenager, to show that other people live in poverty.

Yes i dont have a good opinion on charity in general. But actually its not an opinion, the organizations say it themselves that it helps almost nothing. So if charity doesnt help, you dont solve the problem by spending MORE money on charity.

Hi again guys,

Well I've just shown this vid to my three teenage kids to see what reaction they had, and predictably got three completely different responses.

1. Message was fine, but it didn't solve anything. Feels pretty powerless to effect any real changes.
2. It had a good message, but we shouldn't make light of teenage angst. (from the one that gives most to charity anyway)
3. It really made him think, and he made a resolution to do more to help other people.

I still think that as awareness raising it's pretty powerful. Influencing the way people think is a gradual process and as JBash says, the same message over and over again can lead to immunity, so you have to find new ways of saying it. This was new to me, and I think to my kids too.

I agree that nothing has changed through watching it - those people are still living in terrible circumstances, and I'm not.

Think of Escribano's thread 'it really is a wonderful world' - for some of us it is. I for one should stop whingeing about not being able to play very well, and be glad I can afford a guitar and lessons!

Take care guys.

A

Click on the hunger site daily. It does not cost anything and may not change anything but every little helps.

http://www.thehungersite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=1

While you are there there's a link to the Breast Cancer site which also needs funds as well as other worthwhile projects. It does not take much to click them every day since we are so often online for various reasons.

Deniz, I see what you mean.
Every proces has many stages. If you want to learn to play the guitar, there are many steps to go through. First you have to decide you want to learn. Then get a guitar, then practice etc. The same with solving a poverty problem. "Opening your eyes"is the very first stage of it. As deciding to play a guitar won't make you play it so won't this feed one single kids stomach. But it's a start don't you think?

quote:

And only because we do it daily we dont become ignorant towards it.

Why then? I think comparing 'eating' to this problem isn't quite appropriate.
Everyone is schocked by watching a video of sh*it happening for the first time. And majority doesn't do anything as long as it isn't happening to them. When a sh*it hits them, they move, they do something, and help others because they know how it feels.

quote:

And why you say it wouldnt be better if everybody were rich? It certainly would be better if everbody had not only something to eat, but also to drive or to watch or to listen.

Because richness doesn't bring a true happiness. As long as you think of richness as such material things as ipods cars etc. you search a happiness in the wrong place. Those asian and african kids in video are rich. Richer than us. But as we all are just human beings we first have to satisfy our main needs such as having food, water, place to sleep... When those are covered we can fully enjoy our 'richness'. And I don't mean ipods and play stations, I mean love, friendship. This is what makes one really rich. Those poor people won't be happy when they get their headphones and cars, they will be most grateful if they get an everyday meal and a glass of water so they can live. Those are the places where materialism hasn't ruined everything yet.

But I agree that comparing lives could be a risky thing. When you judge other cultures you mustn't do it comparing our lives to their, I agree. This is called ethnocentrism which can only lead to misinterpreting and intolerance. We should judge a culture and social situations from its own point of view considering cultural relativism. Here I agree with you, Deniz.

quote:

I agree that nothing has changed through watching it - those people are still living in terrible circumstances, and I'm not.

Ailsa,
Again I will say that if you start to think about the problem, you have moved forward on the way of solving it.
