PDL in London...

Hi,

I was on the Paco De Lucia website earlier today and it says he's playing in London on 22nd Nov 2007. Can't find any info anywhere on this - do any of you know anything?

Thanks!

RE: PDL in London... (in reply to Jenny

Hi Jenny, thanks for telling us about this!!!

Basically, there are only 3 venues suitable for a concert by PDL. one is The Barbican:

www.barbican.org.uk

another is The South Bank Centre:

http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/

and the last is The Royal Albert Hall:

http://www.royalalberthall.com/

I've checked all 3 websites, and nothing is showing up for PDL on that date. So I suspect that its too early and the venue may not have been confirmed yet.

Either that, or he is playing at a smaller venue, but demand is always HUGE for PDL tickets, so I would guess that he isn't.

Please do keep us informed if you find out any more info.

Thanks,

Jb

Stadium flamenco?

Hmm. Not sure about that. The various aircraft hangars you mention are very grand, I suppose (you forgot to mention Sadler's Wells and Olympia). But an audience and the art would certainly be better served in somewhere like Hackney Empire.

There are dozens of theatres 'suitable' for Paco De Lucia in Britain, and several of them in London.

Huh? are you serious? PDL is not exactly gonna bother doing a show in Bognor Regis now, is he? when he comes to England (which he RARELY EVER does, these days) its BIG CITIES ONLY.

And within LONDON, there are LIMITED venues that would be suitable. The ones I mentioned above are the most popular with Flamenco artists. In addition, Saddlers Wells sometimes has Flamenco artists, but I would question whether it is the right size for a PDL concert.

I doubt ANY serious flamenco artist has ever played at OLYMPIA in the last 10 years. In theory, it would be possible. But its just not that sort of venue.

And as for "aircraft hangers", PDL played a the Barbican last time he was here, as did Estrella Morente and Tomatito. Gerardo Nunez always plays at The South Bank Centre, and The Gypsy Kings and Joaquin Cortes prefer The Royal Albert Hall.

Hackney Empire?! Can you really imagine Paco The Great playing there? It might be a smaller and more intimate setting in which to appreciate the artform, but that isn't the only thing thats considered these days.

Saludos,

Jb

What's wrong with Hackney Empire? It's a glorious space, with great acoustics.

My point was about hte art and the experience.

But if the only thing which matters is the money....

Oh, you're right about the atmosphere and intimacy being better at smaller venues. After all it used to be all about tiny penas and juergas, didn't it? But times have changed and PDL now has his own flashy website and forum. Alas, I suspect money plays a stronger role in this many would like. even if its not PDL himself who makes the decision, somebody is scheming away. But interestingly Olympia and Wembley are possibly the BIGGEST venues in London, and Flamencos don't really play there. perhaps its a matter of packing in as many people as possible, whilst keeping an eye on the fact that demand for Flamenco is less than that of, say... "Madonna".

Hola amigos,

I emailed the people who run PDL's website and asked them where he will be playing. They got back to me and said it will be at The South Bank Centre, which didn't surprise me too much. But I'm guessing it will be addded to their website nearer the date.

HTH,

Jb

Well, Paco probably won't be interested. But I bet Juan Martin would take up your offer!

Yeah they probably are the best seats James. I suspect he will play much the same set - eg camaron / cositas buenas / entre dos aguas - although would prefer it if he didn't - just cant imagine him bringing any of the old classics out of retirement somehow!

Hmm let's see, my dream set would include A la Perla de Cadiz, Plaza Alta, La Barossa, Panaderos, Guajiras de Lucia, Mi regale.. that would do for starters!
I read somewhere that his daughter has graduated from palmas to dancing now..

Just a belated story about Hackney Empire.

When La Tati The Great played there for the first time last Autumn, she walked downstage at the rehearsal and said

'" I can smell the ghosts.." And went on to give a supernatural performance.

Paco de Lucia would love it.

Does anyone need a ticket for this gig?? While I'm still gonna be there, I will be working there so I have no use for my ticket.

If anyone wants it, its a £45 ticket in the 4th row.I will do it for slightly cheaper.

Let me know
