Flamenco lessons with Jason McGuire

I am a student and a member of his website since some weeks now. He has many videos and lessons there showing techniques, excersizes, explaining the different palos and teaching some of his falsettas with fast and slow videos, videos of right and left hand on each vide, Notes for most of videos, and he continously adds videos and lessons.

I can recommand it to anyone who doesnt have a good teacher around him.
This is a good alternative.

And he is a really cool and friendly guy. You can ask him questions and he always takes time to answer, etc.

This is his webiste:

RE: Flamenco lessons with Jason McGuire (in reply to Arash

I became aware of Jason's website/lessons a while back, and initially the price was a deterrent for me. But, when you think about it, it only comes to $1 a day. I just wished there was a comprehensive description of the lessons offered. All the website says (or all i could find) is that there are "over 14 styles of flamenco" offered.

I was focusing on Alegrias a while back, but just learning compas and falsetas was not working for showing me the big picture of how all the different parts fit together. At any rate, I'm getting the feeling that nothing short of a teacher/dance class to play for is going to provide that instruction. I bought Adam Del Monte's Alegrias lesson, and it pretty much was the standard format (just a couple of falsetas with very little compas), and no time spent on its application for dance accompaniment.

I think I'll give Jason's lessons a try. You can cancel at any time, right?

Yeah you can cancel anytime before your 3-day trial has ended and you'll only be billed $9.99. Or you choose a month for 29,99$ or an year and you get 2 months for free.

p.s. i will ask Jason if likes to join FF and tell you and others more.

Escribano,
Thanks for sorting out the registartion thing. I was wondering why I never recieved that. I was alerted by Bikhiyal that there were a few people with questions about my website here and I thought it would be a good idea to try and answer those questions.

For anyone who may be wondering about my website..... I have 2 free classes available on the site it self. I also have 3 free lessons posted on YouTube. http://youtube.com/profile?user=JasonMcGuireFlamenco .....All of these free lessons include the tablature and 6 lesson "segments". Normal Tempo, Slow Tempo, Counted Out Loud, Right Hand, Left Hand and a short commentary about the material. These are not partial lessons.
Most of these lessons are what I would cover in a typical private lesson for the level indicated. Of course, all people learn at varying rates so that is a generalization, but I think you can get the idea. The monthly subscription price is half of what I charge for a 1 hour private class, but of course since it is a subscription site, you can take and watch each lesson as many times as you want or need to. Feedback on your playing is offered by the use of YouTube. Post a private youtube video of your playing of any of the material from the website and I will offer you some tips to make it better. In some ways it is better than a "real" private class and of course in some ways it is inferior.
It is what it is. A new way to learn that I have been developing since I got a broadband internet connection 8 years or so ago.

The website at the moment has 57 lessons available to all subscribers at all times. All of which have tablature/standard notation (except for the last 5 I recently uploaded, but I should have those done by the end of this week). There are 3 lessons on cante accompaniment including recordings of Felix de Lola singing with palmas, but no guitar, enabling the students to really test themselves on the material. Lots of compas for just about everything except Seguiriyas and Rumba. I haven't got around to those yet, but will soon.Lots of falsetas including a few from my concert solos that appear on YouTube.com

Over the next couple of years I plan to keep posting lessons every month and the library that will be available to all will be enormous. I have been teaching for many years and I have a lot of material for players of all levels. Most of the material is intermediate level, but there is plenty of advanced and beginning material too.

The one drawback is that you have to login to take the classes. It is the only way to make all lessons available to all students at all times. The scores cannot be printed.
But, they are interactive, meaning that they use the Sibelius Scorch Plugin. You can hear midi playback of the score, change its tempo up or down as needed and you can also change its key. I have tried to make the site a good value for just about anyone interested in flamenco guitar. I have other features planned for the near future that will make it an even better value. One of which is dance accompaniment. I have developed a method of teaching this that will be a great way to prepare for this rather enigmatic aspect of flamenco. Although playing for dance is not particularly the most difficult thing, it is rather difficult to teach and I think my method will answer a lot of questions for students.

I will be happy to answer any questions you might have about the site either here or via my email address jason@caminosflamencos.com

I also want to mention that I know there are some very, very talented guitarist here on this forum. Congradulations to all of you for creating a place for people to discuss the art of flamenco. Back when I started out, it was very difficult to get information. I had to move from Texas to New York just to get started. I am sure all of you here realize what a wonderful asset a place like this is. The moderators and all who attempt to answer the many difficult questions people have about flamenco should be commended for their generosity. Ole!

Hey Jason, welcome to the forum, and thanks for the info. I'm very interested in this new material you plan on adding, count me in when it's added.

I will certainly let you guys know about it when I get the dance stuff finished. Thanks for the warm welcome. And I do hope that I can offer on these forums a perspective on things flamenco that is unique and informative.

RE: Flamenco lessons with Jason McGuire (in reply to Arash

My website is a godsend for some who don't live anywhere near a good teacher. Some are apprehensive that I am just out to make money. Trust me, I have spent way more money on my website than I have made on it or will make on it for some time. Hopefully that will change down the road. I am talking "major investment". Maybe I should have just bought a couple of killer guitars and some more vintage mics and made a book and DVD instead. Too late...

I love to teach and have more than 20 years experience teaching guitar. Not as much teaching flamenco, but my methodology is something I developed fresh out of High Scool teaching general guitar classes to people of all ages and walks of life. It has served me and many of my students very well. Falseta.com just visited my website and is writing up a review of it. I am sure it will be an honest assessment, considering they recently reviewed some of Adam del Monte's videos as well. Adam is a player and teacher whom I have much respect for. I am sure his lessons are very well done. Falseta.com contacted me about reviewing it. I did not request a review.

About my presence here, I am more than happy to talk about my "baby" here, but really I am finding it more compelling to share my thoughts on the art of flamenco in general.

RE: Flamenco lessons with Jason McGuire (in reply to JasonMcGuire

I have finally signed up to Jason's flamenco-lessons.com.
I highly recommend it. Why did I wait so long! Probably because he gives so much away elsewhere that trying to work through all of that first is time consuming enough!

I've always been very impressed by Jason's generosity on youtube and here on the foro. I have gained a lot from him already- priceless information, so I am glad that even in a small way I can express gratitude by paying him.

There is a lot of very good material to suit all kinds of interest. Personally it is Jason's compas and rhythm that I really enjoy. His site has lots on these aspects of playing; in fact more than any other resource I've found. Most instruction focuses just on solo material. Most of my compas I've learnt the hard way, in the deep end whilst accompanying. (Learning how to listen, compose and when to play appropriate compas for others is essential but here on this site one would gain a few new weapons to have at one's disposal)
Of course I need falsetas but I am much more interested in accompanying than solo playing. I really like the modern edge he has in his rhythm (some of the more progressive chords and modulations don't always do it for me but there is still lots in his harmonic composition that I find very flamenco).

His site has lots of solo stuff too but just wanted to share and let others know it really is a great source for compas. In fact it's a great, well rounded resource for pretty much all aspects of playing flamenco guitar at whatever level you're at.

The only problem I can see is the flames of my obsession with flamenco are now raging and it's hard to stop playing! There's so much great stuff here it can be hard to choose what to work on.

One other comment is that I find when I am around a great player or watch one up close on video something happens to my playing to improve it. It almost like I can imagine playing like that player and my technique improves. It's a strange thing- we humans are blessed with imagination and vision; of course hard practice with a metronome is the order of the day but there is also inspiration. Jason's site is certainly very inspiring.
