friction pegs, where to purchase?

Hello----does anyone out there sell or can me tell where I can buy a set of six friction pegs? Looking for ebony or rosewood--a dark wood. Any help? thanks.

Michael,

You may want to try eBay. I have seen them being listed
there from time to time.

Michael, you can buy pegs from this German company:

http://www.dick.biz/

(although the forum will sensor the name because its also a prohibited slang word for genitals: D...I...C...K). Just click on the tab for "English language", then do a search for pegs. LOTS will come up.

Failing that, I know of 2 companies here in the UK that sell them:

http://www.touchstonetonewoods.co.uk/ttwp19.html

http://www.luthierssupplies.co.uk/ (catalogue -> violin family -> pegs)

I would guess that www.stewmac.com or www.lmii.com might have some too if you're looking for a US supplier:

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Violin_tuners/Violin_Tuning_Peg.html

http://www.lmii.com/CartTwo/thirdproducts.asp?searchtext=pegs&NameProdHeader=Flamenco+and+Violin+Pegs

Btw, I think peghead guitars use VIOLA size pegs, rather than violin size ones, but I can't quite remember which... any luthiers can feel free to clear up the confusion...

yes, viola pegs are the ones. sometimes you can buy special flamenco pegs but the right viloa pegs are better. .. then you have to fit them ! another subject!

Michael

The ones from LMI are very thick and uneven, meaning you have to work them a lot with a pegshaver... The one from *ick are a lot better IMO and you can get many different. Buy the smallest size Viola pegs...

Michael.

When I said to buy the smallest size Viola pegs, I ment smallest diameter, but I forgot that you are maybe buying pegs to fit an old guitar. In this case remember to messure the holes before you order.

Interesting question. We should do some experiments to see exactly which words are sensored. How about ****?

That cracked me up How can this be allowed but not d*ck? What about John Thomas, pecker, tallywagger, pito, third arm of justice, zipper ripper, Donald Pump, ankle spanker. I guess it doesn't censor slang terms.

I'm not sure where to buy friction pegs for a flamenco guitar because I use machine tuners and think the only reason to use friction pegs is for tradition....

If you can't find a place to buy the pegs you need, I think you could easily use the largest viola, and a peg shaper to get them down to the size you want.

Blanks and a shaper are available at www.stewmac.com

Using the peg shaper is very easy, just be patient and don't force the peg to turn or you'll cause the ebony or rosewood to split. Heh, I had a hell of a time learning this when I was a child and my father made me cut violin pegs all the time.

Good luck to ya!

you could also try mechanical pegs, here:

pegheds.com

the inventor / maker, john herin, is a first chair symphony cellist and will install them for free if you send him the instrument. i believe the cost for the pegs is around $120.

i had these on one guitar and they worked pretty well but they did not stay under tension perfectly. however, they were not installed by the peg maker, but by the luthier.

i have heard from another flamenco luthier who uses them on nearly every guitar that if installed correctly they work perfectly.

good luck--
