Fisher Price: My First Guitar

Okay guys, I promised you some photos of the guitar I'm currently making. trouble is, I've been off college most of the week due to having the flu, so I haven't had a chance to finish the binding and take more photos.

So, I'm gonna post a few photos of the headstock. Its inspired by the Conde "Media Luna" design, but I gave it a twist of my own.

This headstock has some unusual features... firstly its got both a front veneer and a back veneer. The reason for that was because its a 2 piece neck, so I wanted to cover up the unsightly scarf joint. I noticed this on my yamaha... 2 piece, scarf joint necks aren't usually seamless, so I wanted to mask it with another veneer.

Another unusual feature is that this headstock has SIDE veneers too. Now this WASN'T intentional... It just came about because I trimmed too much of the edges, and rather than throw the neck out and start again, I ad-libbed it and decided to add extra veneers.

I should say that the headstock isn't quite finished either... the bottoms of the side veneers will be angled to approximately 45 degrees to meet the back veneer, which will itself have a gentle curve towards the centre.

I'm aware that this is not a traditional headtsock, and when it comes to my second guitar, there will definitely be a few things done differently. Most of all, I need to take extra care not to take too much off with the plane!

When I get back to college next week, I'll try and take some photos of the body, and add them to this thread.

Cheers,

Jb

I scanned the image from an old book on "optical Illusions" and edited it using photoshop.

I think you should have changed the "B" logo to "Bash"...
Much more evocative and inspiring IMO.
Really...

"Bash Guitars...Hand- Made in England".

Now..that's the stuff of Legend IMO.

A label needs an anchor or a meaning for people to get excited.

For example if a Company called "Puny" made the biggest, highest powered sound systems in the World, then everybody with the money to buy one would want to own one.
If you attribute "Bash" to a really fine instrument it has the same phsycological effect.

On the subject of brands..
I remember walking home along Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow at midnight after a party and noticing a Solicitors office with a brass plate inscribed "BLOCK, GREY & BLOCK (partners)".
You can see where the cartoon stereotypes are born, can't you?

cheers

Ron

Thanks for your comments, Ron. Although I didn't find the juxtaposition of "Bash" and "fine instuments" very complimentary! I did think a similar thing... "Bash" is actually what everyone (apart from my parents) has called me since I was in my early teens. I gave it a go, but I couldn't get 4 letters to fit inside the circle and still be of a readable size. Still, you never know... I got a couple of water drips on the original label so I'll be replacing it with a similar one just before the guitar is complete.

Cheers,

Jb

First off, take care of your flu. I'm sure you wouldn't want to miss school anymore, especially when you're making guitars.

Next, great job! Nowhere near as bad as my first guitar made of a tissure box! Really nice looking and creative headstock. Can't wait till you get it done, then hopefully we can listen to some sound samples of it.

Good luck with your luthiery and take care.

Cheers,
Cheston

Looks great JB!

The headstock design is very creative and differs a lot from what I have seen before. I like it Designing a headstock is one thing but to actualy take a drill and put a hole in it is an other thing, once you started there is no way back.

What plan did you use for this one? It seems the body is smaller then a "normal" classical guitar.

As for the sound, it is difficult to hear because the volume is a bit low and you did not record in a studio I gues...

You mentioned the angle of the neck and thats what I found difficult to find good info on, so, whats wrong with the angle and how are you gonna do it on the Hernandez plans?

One thing that got me puzzled is the college, is that a college just for luthery or do they teach other things, like math and so on and if so, how many time do you spend on building and why dont we have that in Holland?

Well, I am impressed!
I would like to hear the guitar after it is played in a bit and with better recording ehhh how do you call it.... stuf?

Rob.

Here's the link to that Cumpiano article on neck angles:

RE: Fisher Price: My First Guitar (in reply to JBASHORUN

Thanks for the link JB!

I have build my first guitar from the book of Cumpiano and the second I did not finish. (I will after the flamenco)

Cumpiano makes a flat fingerboard on the glueing side so there is no neck angle. The title of the book is "Tradition and technology" but it seems to me that the tradition is to build a angle in the neck and adapt the fingerboard to the angle. So you would have to plane the glueing side of the fingerboard from the 12th fret to the 19th fret.

The tradition seems to be to make the plantila and plane a slope in the neck erea to get the right neck angle, so it seems that you have to know the angle before you start gueing.

But I will study the text of Cumpiano, maybe that will help.

Thanks again and I would like to see the pictures of the next guitar you are building.

Cheers!
Rob

Rob, for my second (Santos hernandez) guitar, I made a Solera and put a slope or 2 or 3mm on the neck section, as described in Roy Courtnall's book. But you are right... I think Roy uses the same slope for ALL of the guitars in the book. Although I don't think that would be a problem if you are making a flamenco/classical. You just need to remember to adjust the fretboard accordingly.

I came to the same conclusion and I did not realy belive all the masters had the same angle. Anders gave me a way to adopt the fretboard and I will use that.

I see that I used the word plantila where I ment solera It was late and the bottle was empty....

Rob.

Hi James,

that's definitely a guitar which I would try if I would saw it in a music store.

But I couldn't open the link to the audio files.

Thanks for your comments Georg and Flamenco_9!

I have auploaded a couple of clips to the audio section:

http://www.foroflamenco.com/m_63912/appid_/p_1/mpage_1/key_/tmode_1/smode_1/s_/tm.htm#63916

But please note that my recording software is not the best, and neither is my playing!
