Douglas Adams. Yes this book is my bible too.

[EDIT] I ll answere the other statements a little later. At the moment I have to fight some chinese food in my mouth and after that I have to buy some shampoo first, coz my actual one is empty.

At first, I m happy coz somebody thinks like me huuu

A degree these days costs three years of a student’s life and up to £20,000 by the time tuition fees and living costs are taken into account. For a fortunate few, however, there is a way round investing large amounts of time and money — appear in a reality TV show, manage a football club or tell a couple of funny jokes. Welcome to the world of the honorary degree.

More later..damn I ate too much...

The reason universities are willing to confer honours on celebrities is that both sides win. The university gets publicity by reaching out an academic hand of welcome to someone famous, while the personality gets to wear scarlet gowns with silk facings and soft black velvet bonnets — sometimes with a golden tassel.

Exactly as I told. Do somebody hear an objective opinion about the theme "god, relligion" ?
For first, I prayed today.

I prayed again 15min ago. The shop-closed and I saw the person inside. I prayed to get in... and ... ET VOILA! I got in and bought my shampoo.

The first time today I prayed that my culturised mutants would have an detectable GFP signal. Before,.. I saw nothing. Today the last two probes showed a very weak signal! Too weak to photograph it coz it was under the backgroundsignal... but well. If I wait some more days it could become stronger... I will do a couple of prays for that tomorrow.

Not quite, it was Han Solo in Star Wars . What Branquito said reminded me of that conversation about the Force.

RE: Honorary Doctorate Paco De Lucia (in reply to Florian

"the only people who recognise and care about this kind of titles are people who dont really care about flamenco"

I know you are probably half-joking about this. But, I'm not sure I agree with you on this one. If I remember correctly, Grisha seems to be "earning" his DMA at the New England Conservatory--Yeah, yeah, you are going to say that he doesn't need it...and you are right! But, If you ask him what he plans to do with it, then you'll realize that he DOES need it and that he does care about Flamenco a great deal. Romerito is also getting a Doctoral degree if I remember correctly...? He seems to care about flamenco judging by his posts here.
What is this have to do with Paco? Nothing really. I personally think that Paco, while he does not need a Doctoral degree in any way shape or form, has been bestowed a really great honor - especially since it comes from a bunch of tight ass scholars that apparently have recognized his contribution to his art after all these years - and I'm sure He is flattered as he doesn't really strike me as the arrogant type.

Just my 2 cents...

Isaak u are right i am half joking, i could go either way right now lol i could argue some points or i could dismiss it as a joke..

I will dismiss it as a joke on my behalf (cause as much as there was a litlle truth to what i was saying, more to do with my own feelings on the subject i was more interested in beeing funny than accurate or fair, ofcourse its nice to be recognised ) however Grishas Phd has nothing to do with flamenco to my knolodge and more classical, but i could be wrong if i am , i apologise Grisha .

and re Romerito, i wasent aware , I am sure he has his own good reasons for doing it, i do not wish to speak on his behalf, I think its great, but if i had to guess Id guess hes probably doing it more for self satisfaction than perks.

oh.. I thought Zaphod Beeblebrox said that.. :.(( ..I only know the german verions of Star Wars.

ok, as I read, a honorary dr. has to do a speach about the field where he got it. Did paco play a solo? There are people who got over 150 honorary doctorates so I think its no problem to donate it to paco. Also if the use of this ceremony lays mainly on the side of the uiversity than on pacos. They just use him.

And a normal Doctorate is not just a doctorate in comparison to a honorary one. A honorary one is just like "worlds womens day" or a honorary medal for the last kid who crossed the final-line in a running competition,,. that it doesnt cry wehn going home... I think paco doesnt need such a crap.

I found this, but I don't know what's going on as I don't speak Spanish. Maybe it will shed light for you guys and you can explain.

This story reminds me of reading and hearing a few times about Paco's old insecurities about education, musical and otherwise.

Anyway, I don't understand the purpose of the honorary doctorate. I always get confused whenever I see it happen, and nothing seems to come of it afterward.

Also, this was posted on flamenco-world:

"Paco de Lucía is invested Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Cádiz (UCA). The Algeciras-born guitarist was conferred this honor on March 23rd at a ceremony held at the Superior Polytechnic School of Algeciras. The sponsor of the act and vice-rector of UCA’s University Extension, Virtudes Atero Burgos, pointed out in the ‘eulogy’ that “what is folk, what is Andalusian and what is flamenco have been added by Paco del Lucía to the artistic ambience of the cultured, to which they in fact belong”. Moreover, he went back over his artistic career and his life, falling back on his humble origins and on his ability to personalize musical crossbreeding. Following the protocol ceremony, the toque maestro admitted that this award was special to him: “When I found out about the decision by the University of Cádiz, I felt something different. I’ve always considered myself the antithesis of formal education. I’ve always been streetwise and self-taught in every sense of the word”. And that, in his case, represents “real pride in a component of effort and dignity”. In the name of the university institutions, rector Diego Sales Márquez recognized that the ceremony was “a way to at least partly reduce the enormous debt the university owes to flamenco”."

I am considering to get my MA in ethno then phd in anthro
i think they go hand and hand with each other...after all, it is the anthro of music

please keep me posted on your work, I am very interested (since i will be doing something similar with my dissertation)

sounds interesting
I hope to do work on flamenco and its culture as a whole.
the giving/reciprocation (similar to Mauss' work) of musical ideas within the triad of musicians. I further hope to analyze how flamenco has an impact on the musicians everyday lives.

anyways, have you read blacking's "how musical is man"?
and i'm sure you're familiar with alan merriam

i'm concerned with the act of flamenco as well...just how the music is integrated into the musicians lives..i will be basing my work of Seeger's study of the Suya of south america his book "Why Suya Sing" is a great read and great for ideas on research.
and my initial work will focus on the triad (since many are unaware of the other facets of flamenco, but between you and I, I totally agree)

I meant flamenco as a proverbial "flamenco" in other words its aura and culture. Anyways, good luck with your dissertation.

I was also told that theres a prof at NYU that has done some research into flamenco...perhaps you can check him/her out

I was darn impressed with the guitar program over at Cal state Fresno, established by J. Serrano. Imagine several young classical guitar students, sitting in classical postion with A frames sucktion cupped to the "negra" classical/flamenco hybrid guitars, but playing bulerias in compas with proper technique and sound. Later switching over to Bach and what not, classical standards. Serrano used his honory doctorate in a serious manner, established a legit curriculum and was able to some how get the students to mix in the flamenco without hurting the classical technique and rep.

Before I saw that I honestly did not think Flamenco and acedemia should or even could mix. And I say that as someone with a Bachelors in Music.

Despite all his years as an experienced player and accomp., Serrano would have had to go to school all those years to get a Degree legitamately. What a waste of time. PDL has the same piece of paper that would allow him to become a college professor if he ever so chose. Well anything ever come out of giving PDL this doctorate? Who knows, but the potential is there. He could lecture at universities and stuff, instead of concertizing.

Imagine, "um, Dr. Paco, I forgot my homework, can I have an extension? "

AT the same time, I understand the frustrations someone like Doit would have at just giving the thing to some one, especially in art since it comes more naturally to some. PDL did not have those same tests, but he had tests all through life of a different kind.
