Review: Paco de Lucia Toronto

Hi,

Paco played Massey Hall last night, and I thought I'd let you know what to expect...

Nearly same group:

Antonio Serrano
Nino Josele
Alain Perez
Pirana
Chonchi Heredia
Montse Cortes

Same setlist as he's being doing for a while now.

Halfway through the Rondena, he shouted (inaudibly to us) at someone stage left about his chair which was too tall. At the end of the piece, he apologized to the crowd as he was going backstage to hunt for a proper chair. LOL

Paco played pretty well. One pleasant surprise was that he played a few falsetas I hadn't heard him play live, like a bulerias from Camaron's Potro de Rabia y Miel. Also, Chonchi and Montse stole a couple of letras from Juaneke's album and Tomatito's Guitarra Gitana, and there was a new theme sung over Entre Dos Aguas that I did not recognize.

The original sextet or at least Duquende was sorely missed.

sounds like the consert in Oslo except for the chair hunt.
i also noticed the not so typical falsetas played, also in the rondeña he played a few "old" falsetas

I also missed Duquende. I just love his voice

Same concert the day after in Montreal... drove 3 hours to see that. It was my first flamenco experience and it was excellent .

Duquende is no longer touring with Paco. There were some disagreements with pay. La Tana has some issues too. She wasn't showing up to concerts and with her pay too.

Un saludo, Errol

Two of my friends recorded it, but I don't know yet how it turned out.

Guitar was Conde, the new one you see in recent photos. It sounded good, like Paco! His picados still had lots of bite and he didn't misfire too much actually.

I didn't know that about Duquende and La Tana. Shame.

Ilia, yup, that's pretty much the list, but in different order. I think you just missed the Minera-Fandangos solo. Anyway, nothing new, most of us will be familiar with his list these days.

Actually, the solo pieces were the highlight for me, because I'm not overly impressed with the interaction of this group. They are all very competent and great, even individually successful, but the magic isn't there in this group for some reason. A little uninspired as a whole. Maybe they are also disgruntled over pay? hehe

I suspect the Montreal show was much better, always is, owing to the more educated, enthusiastic audience I think. I was there in 2004 and it was incredible... he played three encores, the last one ten minutes after the house lights went on!

What strings did he use?????

I love Chonchi's voice. Hope she comes here. I am already tired of the others.

I was at the Toronto show...
To be honest with you, it was not Paco at his best. He kept talking to the sound guy on stage, seems that they could not get the sound from his monitors right. There was the chair issue, which was just plain funny.
Paco missed compas twice on La Barossa, he literally stopped for about 2 seconds and then got back into compas...
Apart from that, it was still incredible, especially on solo pieces like Camaron...
Hanged out a bit at the end of the show and got him to sign my guitar!

Ahh.. I haven't been around the board for a month or two... I wish I had then maybe I would have heard about PDL being in Toronto.
Now I have to wait for him to come back to this area.
