Where is the best location in Spain ... 
Hola a todos amigos,
I'm living in UK and i´m going to move in Spain soon.Last year i´ve been studing jazz here in east sussex but really my dream is to move to Spain and study flamenco in Andalucia.I will have to find a job to live (of course) so i really need all the help,experience and wisdom of everyone.I was thinking about Granada or Cordoba even cos they are such beautiful cities.
Please any help or suggestion will be appreciate.

I think what can help everyone answer the question is for you to consider what school, so to speak, of flamenco most attracts you. What I mean is that there are some important and wonderful regional differences.

I have a good friend here in San Diego (Ed) who had a really great experience in Granada, studying with Paco Cortes and Emilio Maya. He stayed in an apartment that belonged to Marina Heredia. He came back with a lot of nice material and some wonderful memories. I believe Granada flamenco can be a little different than it is from other places.

Jerez is very much a stronghold, and there are some styles of playing bulerias from there that are really great.

Cádiz also has some unique elements and it is another historically very strong flamenco city.

Sevilla, I hear, is the flamenco mecca of Andalucía. There is an American guitarist named Ethan Margolis living there who has done some workshops here in San Diego. He is a fountain of really great knowledge about flamenco, you should be able to find him pretty easily.

In Utrera, Lebrija and Morón you might find some very traditional styles that left very strong imprints on others who have gone there. The small city feel might be attractive.

Of course, theres Madrid, where you can find Caño Roto and Viejín, Ramón Jiménez, David Cerreduela, El Entri and others who have a newer style many people like. Also, I hear Rafael Riqueni has been in Madrid and was teaching a while back. There's also Miguel Rivera and others associated with Serranito who you might like to check in with.

In Córdoba there are also many fine guitarists, but I don't know who you can get in with there. Córdoba has produced some really big name guitarists and I bet there are some excellent teachers there too.

I'm curious to see what other suggest.

East Sussex?
I go there a lot to give concerts and classes in Brighton and Lewes. I'm going there in a few days to discuss a play of Lorca that I am composing the music.
I teach solo, accompany cante y baile.
Maybe we meet one day to prepare you for Spain.
Madrid may be the best place to find very good teachers. If not Sevilla, Córdoba and Granada--in fact anywhere where there is a teacher who will help you.

if you are intersted to take lessons with paco serrano contact me i can give you his contacts but i think he is a littel bit excpensive , but he is a good guy and his girl friend can help you in transelation ;O))

I recomend Jerez. It's in a good location: 1/2 hour from Cadiz and the beaches, an hour from Sevilla , and has good bus and train service available. There are many people you could take lessons from such as Fernando Moreno, Antonio Jero, El Carbonero, and thers if you inquire. There may be better teachers in other places, but no where else is there as much ACCESSIBLE Flamenco. And what's more it can often be found for free. Jerez is also one of the cheaper cities to live, relatively speaking. If you want to immerse yourself in Flamenco then go to Jerez.

Jobs in Andalucia? That's a little more difficult.

In Cordoba, Merengue teaches song accompaniment and i think he can put you in contact with other guitarists like Manuel Silveria and there is also Manolo Sanlucars course and a lot of activity during the festival with workshops etc.

In Granada i guess you could ask Kate to know whats going on, it was a while since i was there.

I forgot that in Córdoba, if you choose to go there, you could also find Alberto Lucena. He came to San Diego a few years ago and taught a bunch of us a few things. He is a really good guitarist, awesome technique and style, knew how to accompany dance and cante. He played on the Antonio Porcuna "el veneno" cd titled Vivencia Flamenca. You would not have a hard time finding him there, he is known there and won a fairly prestigious prize.

Also, if you don't know Spanish, do everything you can to immerse yourself now and begin to learn, buy a used textbook or some kind of course on cd or anything, it will help immensely.

There are a lot a good places to learn. Do you know that place? Have a look on the url below:

Emilio Maya teaches there and many others. The good things is that the school rent flats and rooms at good prices and you can meet a lot of flamencos students and even practice with them.

I want to thank you all guys.I´m sorry i couldn´t answer before because i´ve just returned from a month holiday from Argentina.

I have another question for all of you.Once i had a flamenco guitar lesson in Brighton (UK) with a guy that was telling me about a really good flamenco course in Granada that cost 400 euro a year.So good that ,the last time i saw him(about 8 month ago),he told me he was going to move to Granada to start the course on september and he did!!!

So i wonder if someone has heard about this course.(it´s suposed to be really good)

As i remember it, the course i was told about cost 400 euros for the whole year and not monthly.I imagine the course is partly subsidized by the government.

Anyone heard about it????

You´ve been very helpfull!!!
I want to announce that me and my love we are off to GRANADA IN ONE WEEK!!!
We are at the moment in Ecuador(in Guayaquil) since october trying to make a life work for us even if it´s not our life.Struggling to make work something that we don´t want really but someone else want (my dad).
i hope you understand what i mean.
we are going to immerse ourself in the mecca of flamenco.
JAJAJAJAJAJJAJAJAJJA

I´m so happy!!!

And the Jerez Flamenco Festival is on while you are here. I think Fergusito from this forum is in Granada at the same time. We may be going to Jerez for a while. I live near Granada myself. Let me know.

I can´t believe it Fergusito is in Granada!!!
I took some lessons with him in Brighton(UK).
Fantastic.
I´m so looking forward to it!

I will arrive on the 28/02 in the evening.
I found a place in a shared house in the south of granada(6 km from the centre).
We are going to stay there for a month enough time to find a nice place and a job.
