guitarists except spanish men???

Hi all,

I am wondering if there are any known flamenco female-guitarists? I wonder why i don't hear about them

Also are there any famous/known flamenco guitarists which are not spanish? or do the spanish ppl still have the monopol?

regards,
sabo

Flamenco is too hard for girls to play, and people born outside of spain don't have compas.

hahaha ricardo

sabo yes theres both, from what i hear, just cause we dont speak of it here dosent mean it dosent exist, the flamenco world is alot bigger then only the names most of us know.

I mean theres a huge list of talented outside guitarists weather they are recognised or in Spain I couldnt say, i have no idea, nor do I care, but obviously the Spanish have the monopoly if u wanna call it that as expected because its they'r thing. Its they'r culture.

Just like when England invented Soccer oh wait..... hehe , thats not a good example

but between all the cooking and washing and taking care of theyr man, girls dont really have time to play guitar

so in the end i have no idea what outside guitarist gets respect in Spain but i cant tell you some of the names , i for one respect.

And about females, i know its dosent seem like a natural thing but i have seen videos of talented female guitarists and we even had a lady guitarist here in my city.

I have even seen videos of Japanese flamenco singers doing concerts in Spain and they were freakin brilliant, so its a crazy world with 1 million crazy rules that never apply

Why is it too hard for girls? Don't they have fingers too like boys?

And is it genetic to have the compas?

Best regards,

yeah. My wife plays guitar a little, but nowadays if I see her plunking around on my 6 string I say "HEY woman! Put that thing down and knit me a sweater...and bake me a pie or something!".

Yes, but they are just so delicate and fragile and weak compared to boys.

No. You can be gitano or payo and still have compas as long as you are spanish.

hes right sabo lol, its very hard to resist

but in all seriousness, i think women should be allowed to play guitar after cooking , ironing etc.
we have to be fair, if shes done her work , who are we to stop em from playing a litlle ? i mean it cant hurt , is not like they would ever be a treat to us

I mean i consider myself a sencitive and caring guy, if the woman i love wants to play guitar for half an hour a day between choirs, and that would mean that she will do the dishes with a smile on her face , i would support her on that.

because i am not old fashioned !!

I was just wondering about this and then realized i am stupid that its true for all other guitar styles, i never heared about any really famous female guitarists :) however, i listen only to flamenco guitar !

Dominic,

I just didn't know about this topic, that it would be making the thread so full. I thought one or two ppl will drop by saying its hard to find his email or in best case someone knowing his email and that's it :)

Its no problem, as long as I am not paying for what ppl wrote there :P

Best regards,

Have seen two English flamenco guitarists performing in flamenco shows at prestigious venues in the UK recently - El Ingles and Chris Mullett (founder of Flamenco Express).

Dont know how well known they are in spain if at all of course.

"Charo studied classical and flamenco guitar while residing in Murcia. As a result of her training and skill she has been named "Best Flamenco Guitarist" in Guitar Player Magazine's readers' poll twice."

That's from Wikipedia. The Guitar Magazine poll proves she's good. Here's a video to prove it. http://www.charo.com/video2.html

This is a very short sighted and uneducated comment, but I think it was intended as a joke. I have heard of an excellent flamenco guitar player in Montreal, Caroline Planté. I was told by another flamenco guitarist, who himself is an authority on flamenco in North America, that she is really good. Check out this web site:

Women actually introduced the guitar into flamenco. In fact, they hand carved the very first flamenco guitars whilst sitting around waiting for their men to leave the pub. Men then got jealous of all the attention they were getting and forced then to wear dresses with such big frilly sleeves that they could no longer play. Unfortunately, this backfired on them when people started going "Oooh, look at that frilly dress" rather than "Love his right hand technique". This focus on the dancing in gig situations is still irritating male guitarists to the present day but they are still refusung to give their guitars back! Karenanne

PS On a slightly more serious note Have heard that a female dance group may be coming to England next year with female guitarists. Will let you know when I know more.

Its not strictly "Puro" Flamenco, but Gabriela from the Mexican duo Rodrigo Y Gabriela is female. She is great at rasgueados, but its usually in a Rumba context.

In a book about Paco de lucia (the master plan) by Don poren. He tells about a female guitarist in the troupe pacos dad joins, or if was the he learnt stuff from her in his begining. I have to find the book to see if i rememberd it correctly.

Hey thanks for the answers folks,

its really interesting to know about it, coz whenever i listen to any flamenco station i noticed that the guitarists are men and from spain exclusively. I heared only few times a guitarist called "el Polaco" and I am not sure if he is polish or if its just a nick. I am also interested about the "aire" they can create, if it will be similar to the spanish guitarists aire, or if their own culture will be influencing their performance !!!!

Well Ricardo, you see??? I got so many correct political answers

And even a new guest to the forum made her first post here :)

I went to a workshop called "Flamenco Communication" that Marija Temo taught. She's an energetic, little slender person who seems to be able to dance, sing, and play about equally well. She kept looking at me and saying how you shouldn't be playing too much Vicente Amigo falsetas for dancers who really just need the compas. I don't know why she thought I coudl play any Vicente Amigo, probably the hair, but she brought it up several times!

Unfortunately, I didn't get a real good look at her playing. There are some dynamite female classical guitarists out there (check out some of the Chinese girls playing Paganini on Youtube or the good-looking Ana Vidovic), but I've never even heard of a "virtuoso" female flamenco guitarist.

I accompanied a dance show years ago and the woman they hired to sing was an older lady (50-60?) from Utrera named Salvadora I think. She had a great voice. For her solo she wanted to accompany herself some Verdiales. I let her use my guitar. It was embarrasing to watch her backstage warming up by ripping through some difficult Pepe Habichuela and Moraito falsetas. It was like "give me that thing sonny, let me show you something!". Looked like she got it all from the Encuentro videos. I think she was the best female flamenco guitarist I have seen other than Marija.
