A cautionary tale

Hola

Last Jueves Flamencos, I was of the opinion that Pedro Sierra, accompanying La Susi, had the best sounding guitar. Others were Antonio de Malena (Conde), Pascual de Lorca (Conde), Román Vicente (Pedro de Miguel), Raúl Vicente (Eladio Fernandez) and Perico Jero (Maldonado). Afterwards, the téchnico de sonido and ex professional guitarrista Manolo de Ceuta agreed that it was not only the best sounding guitar, but the easiest to equalise.

The surprise was that he was playing a Sanchis Carpio de segundo, which reputedly had cost 1200 euros.

People don´t realize Ricardo Sanchís flamenco guitars are fantastic none of the conde hermanos compare to his top model.

I spent an afternoon with the guy having lunch with him and his sons and he told me lots of stories about who makes the condes - including himself at one stage! And when you enter his workshop he has photos of Paco, Tomatito etc.. who all own various models by him. If you can get hold of an old 2f by him it has a fantastic tone and very cheap. i leave in spain now and i see very good players using these.

That´s lives in Spain - sorry just woke up from the siesta then.

PS I´m not saying all Conde´s are bad just the quality can vary a lot and most of the ones I tried have been very overpriced and average quality. Whereas Sanchis are good value (the older ones anyway I haven´t played the new ones that are rebranded under the name of his sons).

I´m heading up to valencia to buy some wood from Barber so I´ll pop into his workshop and try them out then report back.

I'm sorry Sean. Are we talking about Sanchis Carpio or Ricardo Sanchis ?

Or are they both the same ?????

Ricardo Sanchis Carpio - Father

David & German Sanchis Lopez - Sons of Ricardo

All live and work in Valencia, in the same shop.

It is my understanding that Ricardo Carpio (the father) is semi-retired and makes few instruments anymore, only the top, top of the line, high dollar ones.

Tom at LaFalseta knows them and deals with them routinely and will be posting an interview with them on the other flamenco forum soon.

I have a Hermanos Sanchis Lopez F-Extra and love it!!!!

Ricardo Sanchís Carpio his father and grandad and now sons have always built in spain.

I quote him "when you buy a conde you´re paying for the name."

The most authoritative source I know of for your question would be Tom at LaFalseta.

Tom is also an active member here with a userid of TANunez.

However, I believe your Ricardo Sanchis is one made by the father, Ricardo Sanchis Carpio. I base this on my reading about him and his sons and how other people often refer to him as Ricardo Sanchis. Here is but one example. Note the reference to him as Ricardo Sanchis in the 3rd line from the bottom of the "bio" and the link at the bottom left "Ricardo Sanchis Prices."

Zavaletas" Site

Zavaletas' site does show 3 different models of the 1aF made by Richardo Sanchis "Carpio"

There is an old thread here, but I can't locate it as the search utility does not seem to be working, about how Spanish names are used and changed based upon the generation and relationships, IIRC.
