Tone Problem.

Hi. Looking for some advice from the experts on these forums.
I've recently been having problems with my guitar changing tone from time to time.
One minute its sounding really rich, then it changes to a more ringing sound, not unlike a twelve string or a chorus sound, then it gets a toneless sound.
I know it may sound silly, but this is the only way to describe it. I put on a heavier set of strings yesterday (600's) and its got worse now. Although thats probably just with the extra volume from the larger guage.
I cant figure it at all. Its doing my head in

Hugh,

It's a good chance it's from humidity. In our area summers are the driest and my guitars are at their best. Our winters have ultra high humidity, which can give a muddier tone.

I recently received a guitar from a friend of mine in Hong Kong, which has extremely high humidity. For the first week or so it sounded tubby. Now after a month in 40% humidity it is ultra clean and bright sounding.

Thanks Patrick, but this change can happen over the space of me practicing over two/three hours. Its in the same room, there is no change in the humidity. Its a strange one.

Curious. I was going to say mine changes dramatically from room to room.
Could you be holding the guitar differently at a different angle from your head? Or sitting in front of a different wall or corner?

No Gummy, wish it were that simple. I think there must be some internal damage to the instrument, like maybe a glued joint coming loose or the like, and when it shifts about, it causes the tone change. I'd imagine it would only need to be very slight movement to cause such a problem.
That just an un-educated guess on my part.

Its a Yamaha CG150CCA. No I have'nt had a look inside yet, I'll do it when its due another change of strings.
It has'nt suffered any knocks in the past that would cause any damage. It did sit for over a year without playing. I've just recently got back into it again due to being off because of an injury. But it sounded fine a few weeks ago.
