This old joke mainly plays on the fact that (in the old days anyway) a lot of Americans did the "European Tour" for the first time.
For many it was the first time they had ever been out of the U.S.
So they were prepared to accept anything strange from behind the safety of having American Express Travel Cheques in their wallets and a booked room at the local Hilton.
It's a time mainly gone by now (I think.. )

The same sort of thing plays out the world over.

A great story I hear was about a BBC Travel Journalist, who went up to Lapland to promote a "freestyle" Holiday where you live with the locals.

She went out on a reindeer hunting party with the local "tribe".

Over the campfire, the head of the tribe carefully mashed up the reindeer's eyball in a glass and mixed it with home made alcohol and presented it to her with great ceremony, saying that it was a great honour for a guest to receive.
To show respectful gratitude, it was the custom for the whole drink to be consumed in one go.

She held the glass to her lips and steeling herself, gulped it all back.

Whereupon everybody fell about laughing...

It was just a bunch of **** for the unwary tourist.

Flamenco on and off for 7 years (not consistant though and no teachers).
finger style bass for 10 years before that.

The last two years have been terrible for me with respect to practice and progress. I've been rather busy winding down a company (initially), becoming a dad, starting a new career, and generally being pretty slack at focused practice.

I expect to settle and focus more now so perhaps I'll make some head way. You get what you put in to it so stick to it if you love it and that will help things along tremendously.

Hey dude,

Vancouver was cool and wet when I was there (warm and sunny before we got there, warm and sunny after we left......of course).

My sister hit it off with her nephew and my son was quite smitten with his "auntie".

I didn't get to play much but I didn't mind so much because I was preoccupied with travel arrangements etc.

Seattle was really nice though. Generally it was all a good time, especially since it was the first time flying and travelling with my 2 year old.

There's a great restaurant called "El Patio" that's worth a visit - fantastic food and run by a former Winnipeger (no kidding, we compared notes with the owner, turns out we DID actually know a lot of the same people).

So how have you been?

It didn't rain a drop when we were there...:) Next time you go to Vancouver, maybe take your boy to the Storyum. It is a really cool history exhibit with real actors (only in Canada), some very cool sets and special effects, and a 20' tall T-rex! The T-rex was so cool, it scared the heck out this little kid that was there.

Have been good, am finishing up my classical/flamenco/south american album; my mac is running fine; am ready to go back to Seattle and take an Alaskan cruise in about 2 weeks!

Hey Mike, I forgot to tell you. I had started a new job a year ago and it turned into a very big time consumer as more and more was put in my lap. I got back into cycling a few months ago and have been putting a lot of miles in. I have a 180Km ride at the end of August as part of an MS Society fundraiser so I'm at it again. However, two weeks ago I was at a park here in town called The Forks late Friday night with an old friend. There was this "skatepark" with cement pools for riding. I used to do a lot of that but haven't for years. My buddy convinced me to go with him to check it out. I stood on a board for all of 5 minutes, standing still and talking to him. I snubbed a cedar wood chip that had escaped from a nearby planter under my wheel, it sent my board shooting out behind me (the direction I was also facing) and flung me head first into the concrete. Luckily an emergency medical tech was there off duty with his buddies, saw the whole thing and was on my right away. They took me to emergency at one hospital and after multiple CT scans moved me to the larger main hospital downtown. After an emergency craniotomy to relieve pressure from a brain hemmorage, a plate, 30 surgical staples in my head and a few days.......I woke up again (wondering where the hell I was and what the hell I was doing there).

Needless to say, it wasn't exactly my shining moment. Nothing like a splitting headache and a profound sense of stupidity to keep one quiet.

I have temporary hearing loss on my left side and won't be allowed to drive a car again until the end of August, but my hands still work and I can at least still attempt to play my guitar.

So....that's basically where I've been. I hope your summer has been better.

Jamey, damn! I'm glad you're still with us. What a close call...

For some reason I thought you were going in there with your bike...kind of like those motorcylists do, going into a little pit and circling around almost horizontal.

I'm going to be careful in Alaska, I've already canceled the rapelling excursion. Do you think I shouldn't do the dog trekking? I've always wanted to try :0

Anyway, get well and don't make any sudden movements--especially toward hard surfaces!

Flamenco: about 13 months. Melody fingerpicking on an electric for about 8 months before that.

September 2004 - Borrowed a 6-steel-string acoustic. Started extreme basic practice (about the absolute basic you can get) learning stuff like twinkle twinkle little star out of a method book.... about maybe 1-2 hours per week.

November 2004 - Sold one of my Lord of the Rings collectibles and paid rent (woo!), and bought a hollow body electric with the balance, and started collecting music books.. and practicing maybe 1 hour per day.

December 2004 - Bought an Easy Guitar sheet music copy of Classical gas but was immediately disgusted by how easy it was. Found the entire guitar solo online and learned it between December 04 and about February 2005. Probably about 2-4 hours per day (instead of college homework. Who cares about that? hehe)

February 2005 - Spent all my time developing my fingers at playing the tune fast. It's not easy without a teacher. Had multiple breakthroughs where parts would just spontaneously become fluent. still about 2-4 hours per day.

June 2005 - Went to Kansas City, Missouri, USA for a geneological society convention (acompanying my dad who is the geneologist) and on the way back I bought a book in a Long & McQuaid music store- Flamenco: Basic Guitar Techniques. Started studiously working through all the practice sections, and pre-determined my favourite two solo songs at the back of the book (Alegrias Para Baile and Tempastad (Rumba))... probably about 1-5 hours per day.

August 2005 - Sold one of my Lord of the Rings collectibles again (sigh) and bought a cheap classical guitar to replace my steel string electric learning flamenco and classical gas *shudder*. So much happier since then! Practiced probably an average of 2-5 hours per day. Ever since then I've gone solid Flamenco. But I count the start of my flamenco learning with the steel string electric because I was learning tremolo and rasgueado and scales on it. not nearly as easily but it was my start.

Amid intense college studies from January 2006-May 2006, I've had to cut down my guitar playing to maybe 1 hour per day on average. Since graduating with a 3 year diploma in may, my time has gone up again to about 2 hours per day.

WHen I started out, I had no teacher, but a few people gave me advice bits that seemed reasonable. One was "learn a single song really well and so you can entertain once in a while with high quality". Another piece of advice I made up for myself was "learn a really hard song right at the beginning, and when you're finished, you'll have a great song under your belt, and you'll have figured out the techniques by inspiration and you'll be ready for anything."

I type too much. Back to the British-American Jokes.

But I'm neither.. I'm first generation Canadian.
