Hi everyone, I'm new here

I haven't been here before except for once a day or two ago when I found the forum through google.

So now I"m here, and I am into flamenco very obsessively.

My most significant influences are Juan Serrano and Ioannis Anastassakis.

I have a 150 dollar guitar. YEAH! HAHA!
Really though the day I bought it, I invented a policy that is a pretty universal and sound statement- an in-tune 50 dollar guitar will sound better than an out-of-tune 1000 dollar guitar. That's when I was driving back and forth between guitar/music stores and I picked this nice cheap but nice sounding one.

My skill on it isn't superceding the ability for it to sound great, so I have no immediate plan to get a new one, but I've been thinking of buying a pickup that doesn't need to be perminently installed.

I have recorded some videos today, of me playing through some songs & falsettas in the books I've bought to learn from.

I have uploaded one so far, it's supremely compressed (68 seconds down to 350k) but it's great for web usage, especially when I am on dialup, as I am right now

if anyone wants to see it, it's at www.nemonint.com/Sevillana_SS7_Tom.wmv
This is the 7th sevillana from Systematic Studies for Flamenco Guitar, from Mel Bay. I got the book last month as a birthday gift. WOO!
I will probably post this link in the other area for videos and sound clips.

I've been playing flamenco for .. well, okay actually been learning... and *trying* to play for 13 months.

Okay enough, I have more to talk about but I might just save that for later.

Hi Tom,
Welcome!
I like that Sevillanas falseta...the first time I ever heard it was on a documentary about Pepe Martinez (from Sevilla).
Do you know if that's his own falseta, or does it go back futher still?
The guy seemed able to play Sevillanas for hours without repeating himself..

cheers

Ron

Thanks for the welcomes!
Quick replies-

It usually varies- some days I will practice for a couple hours per day, or even half of the entire day between other tasks and jobs if the day is free. Other days I don't play for days at a time. I started with a semi-acoustic electric about a year and a half ago and sometimes I have gotten a bit of a headache from the specific frequencies produced by the electric, so I switch to the acoustic for flamenco and classical songs. THen the same thing happens for the acoustic, and I switch back. In the last couple months I've been just going steady on the acoustic.

I'm glad I could upload the video clip, it's one of the best I could make. I tend to make mistakes constantly, and playing error free for a long period of time is difficult... something more to do with my memory than with my actual fingers' skill.

Re:LOTR, Samwise and Koella, I like Lord of the Rings too (obviously hehe) and The Hobbit but they fall short of my interest in The Silmarillion. The movies are great, and I was really crazy for them and the collectibles for a while, but I got burned out. Also because they cost so much, and it's addictive to keep buying the collectibles. I ended up selling my 2nd Tower of Orthanc for 800 USD and buying my first guitar, back in november 2004.

I am working on a new site, this time database driven, with a hand-made CMS and user-login system for others to come and do stuff. Along with it, I'd like to make a more general site that sits in front of it. Right now I have www.nemonint.com forwarding to sideshowweta.nemonint.com just for the Google and other search engine spiders to have more of a chance to see.

Finally... The single sevillana I played is said to be copyrighted by Juan Serrano, Ron. THis is just what I'm seeing, but it may be that he created it when he was young (like the 40s or 50s?) and so .. I don't know! heh.

My favourite forms are Alegrias por Medio, Farrucas, Soleares, Rumbas, and I think I'm soon going to have a great love of Granainas and Columbianas.
But, I'm still very unseasoned in this. I have only had a modest introduction to the compas and sound styles of only some of the forms. All I've done so far is worked through and learned pretty much all the content of Flamenco: Basic Guitar Techniques by Juan Serrano.

I have to post a question about playing shortly.. maybe tomorrow though.
