RE: Video "Analyzing the Moveme... (in reply to Fawkes

Again, very good observations. The apoyando tip joint thing is in my video about picado. It depends on the orientation of notes when crossing strings (sometimes stiff sometimes necessarily flexed or collapsed). Also the apoyando arpegio thing was discussed. Vicente’s unique left hand legatos make his sound instantly identifiable. One thing the guy should know is Vicente has had more than 1 (I believe) back surgery from playing the guitar. I am pretty sure this is from needing to use a close microphone position for all those concerts. That thing almost killed me as I got older, until I started getting used to changing the guitar hold position by moving my body around a “floating” unmoving guitar. Also playing standing up with a strap and skinny guitar (majority of Rumba gigs) has saved my back as I approach 50.

I'm glad I was so wrong about how this video would be taken. I thought the non-standard descriptions and lack of context would lead to a lot of negative comments, but instead people aren't getting distracted by that at all.

What he analyzed was basic stuff. So there was no room for critics.

But when he goes into detail, he gives mostly very predictable and useless information. For example at 3:08 about arpegio:

"It looks like both the big joint and the middle joint are heavily involved in the plucking of the string because you can see his middle joint go up and toward his palm. Maybe even the tip joint is being utilized there as well."

It's a waste of time to analyze how a certain person's hand is! Everyone is unique. The examples are too many. Also, you can't understand from a video exactly how someone feels while playing. If I make you a video of me playing some scales, it will look like I'm playing with straight fingers. But I don't play with straight fingers.

Exactly. The guy has observed a bunch of details that I used to have to argue with people about, and I wish this video had existed long ago so I could have saved my self the time it took to type out or clarify all the standard misconceptions. I was actually expecting the opposite when I saw the title, but was pleasantly surprised by the guy’s content.

To me, that's why PDL's arpegio stands out. He pushes down rather than plucks so has a much better tone.

I noticed that in your tango picado video. Your picado technique, to me , looks similar to Grisha's. Not a bad guy to be compared to.

Cheers

It is very honorable that someone compares me with such an awesome player like Grisha! Thank you very much!! "Auda"
However, I don't play with straight fingers! That's how it looks!

The guy might be your student.
