Sustain or playability

I always have a dillema.
What is your thought on this for solo playing, control vs sound:

A blanca with long sustain “cathedralic” sound. And lesser control.

Or a blanca with shorter sustain, “lesser” sound, and better control.

Ofcourse, sound is subjective, maybe control for the pro’s too, but you get what i mean. (I hope😃)

RE: Sustain or playability (in reply to gerundino63

Is cathedralic ('concert grade'?) predominantly a feature of the body depth of the guitar?

Depends what you're playing I suspect. Mineras / tarantas usually work better with the sustain IMO.

Realistically, I suspect most guitars if playing in public are going to be massively affected by hall echo, so more control is preferable if live. In a recording studio, bring several guitars...

This is why every flamenco guitarist has two guitars minimum

A lot of things together, wood, top, weight, plantilla. But in general, a “bigger little heavyer guitar”

You have a Gerundino. Play it near the bridge and you have a great flamenco. Play it near the soundhole and you have a great classical. What more could you ask for?

Which gig? Blanca for accompaniment, negra for solo. But it doesn’t really matter.

Taking my guitarist hat off - as a listener - non-concert blanca.

Amplification adds boom.

About three years ago I had three guitars at my brother's house showing them to one of his grown grandsons.

My sister-in-law asked me how many guitars I had. When I told her she asked, "Why do you need six guitars?"

I answered, "Well...you don't really need six guitars."

Now I have seven.

I suspect there may be people on the Foro who have more.

Is it the typical sound of flamenco guitar?

Yes. Are you considering buying your first flamenco guitar? Antonio Carrion is playing a Manuel Reyes.

The one Gerundino Blanca I ever played had that big, bold, sustain sound. It was like the opposite of a Madrid Blanca sound.

Yes, seems it is his main guitar for a few years now.

He still gets the Reyes out sometimes e.g. here in April 2021

I have a nice guitar. Set up and sound are better than any student guitar on the market today. Besides, I'm still practicing techniques, which will take me another 1 or 2 years to master.

Btw, another guitar with dull strings. What guitar does Tomatito play here?

For me it's a trade off between playability and no buzzing. And a matter of raising or lowering the bridge saddle.

Well, I sold most guitars. Trying not to buy other ones anymore 😜

End up with two.

Long sustain blanca, with a firm 3mm set up, and a shorter sustain negra with al “just under 3 mm” Set up.
