Ben Woods

I saw a very sad Facebook post yesterday from Ben’s partner Arlene yesterday. Ben has stage four cancer and is asking for people to pray for him. He said he’s done all the chemo he can and an operation is not possible. I’ve never met him and only know him through his videos. I’ve admired his ability to harness his flamenco training to forge his own path. A few of the things he has done I thought were brilliant. In the video he looked really sick. He’s asking people to pray for him, and send him positive thoughts today at 6pm PST.

I’m on a little vacation in Mexico and I’ve got to be 20 years older than Ben. His situation made me reflect on my own mortality as well as my good fortune. I’ll be thinking about Ben, and hoping for the best. I don’t know him, but he’s one of us.

Terrible news... can't think of much else to say, I have a tendency to go down existential rabbit-holes lately anyway. So sad.

This is terrible, I've had a few chats on YouTube in response to his videos, great guy. Not sure if he is active on this forum but will definitely pray for him. I can't imagine what he is going through, here was the link to his YouTube asking for prayer

Man, this is really tragic. Such a young guy with amazing talent and potential has suffered so for the last few years. It makes me feel like a douche for ever complaining about minor things. Wishing him the best.

RE: Ben Woods (in reply to Mark2

I love Ben like a brother. Hung out with him many times in LA and twice here in DC area. I knew about his problem back in 2020-21 holidays. I did have a friend that beat the same thing (now I feel bad, as he says he doesn’t want to hear stories like that.) He said he was close to finishing treatment and if it was all good he was gonna move. I noticed some months later he posted stuff as if he had changed locations. I was hopeful that was because he had beaten it, but was too scared to ask him. We chatted several times throughout 2021, and the C word never came up. But, this year I had not heard from him and my friend was trying to contact him to no avail. I hope the healing duende reaches him.

Oh man I saw his video on YouTube and I had no idea! It’s hard to watch and know he is dealing with this .. I’ve dealt with the evil C myself and felt this desperation but every situation is different. Never met him but I feel like I’ve known him all these years and hope that he can pull through this

RE: Ben Woods (in reply to Mark2

Today or last night Arlene posted this on Facebook:
My Bennah, our Ben decided early yesterday morning to travel on from this 3-D world and take a great tour of the Universe. He is no longer suffering, no longer in pain. Selfishly I wanted him to stay…we all did … so, so bad. He must have a lot of new and important work to do and I respect his decision. Obviously I am devastated to lose my best friend in this world but I must accept this reality.
He fought so hard every single day until the end. I’ve never witnessed someone go through so much pain and suffering yet consistently, daily, persevere and set goals, brainstorm, create prototypes, art, music, guitars, make time for friends, help friends through their hard times, and still be a mentor to so many both privately and publicly.
I want each one of you that sent video, audio, email, text, direct messages to know that you made Ben feel so loved and calm. I read every single message to him and played your voice right to his ear. He heard all of the love you sent him and I’m telling you it changed the energy of the room and his state of being. Every staff member made note that they could feel the love vibe when they stepped into the room and they visibly saw the changes in Ben’s demeanor.
You know that he loved you, his friends, family and fans with his whole heart. Everything each one of you said filled him up. I am so grateful you shared your love, admiration, songs, memories and heartfelt feelings with him, I believe he needed it.
There are many nuances, signs, coincidences, serendipitous circumstances that have happened in the last two days that are too numerous to share here. They seem divinely orchestrated, everything occurring at the “right” time.
I acknowledge that many of you have been blindsided by this devastating (new to you) news and are completely heartbroken to not have known sooner. This was Ben’s decision to not be public until earlier this month. The backstory is that he had not been feeling well even as early as late 2019. Concerns started with increasing food sensitivities that led to a few Dr. visits in the summer of 2020 and finally going to UCLA emergency in October 2020. This ultimately led to tests and a stage 4 colon cancer diagnosis the 3rd week of October 2020. That led to many treatments, him moving home to Washington in July 2021 to have full family care and here we are.
Please understand that I and his parents are hurting deeply now and these are all the details I wish to share. Please understand our need for space and privacy now so if I don't respond, please respect that. From the bottom of my heart THANK YOU for your love and support for Ben, his family and me at this devastating time.

I did not know Ben Woods. In fact I had not heard of him until this thread started by Mark2, but his valiant fight and the laudatory comments by his dear friend Ricardo and all those who knew him, and knew of him, testify to his talent and grit. RIP indeed.

Ben and I lived in the same studio building it in Oakland for several years, he lived around the hall corner from my guitar shop. I listened to him developing his flametal concept, and we were just two dudes in the bay area scene. We used to drinking together in the early days (1998- ish)

He came to Keni Parker’s gig at the Albatross bar in Berkeley where all the flamenco people hung out. He had long hair and he as learning to play flamenco after playing metal in Washington state. He has this big goofy grin.

They broke the mold when that boy popped out.

Just a causal guitar guy here. I found Ben Woods maybe on this forum and have been watching his youtube videos every since. Even got a few tabs from his site that have been very helpful and fun to play.

He was prolific in putting out art in many forms not just guitar. He seemed very creative and DRIVEN always posting a youtube video, some links to all is different music, even artwork and making nylon electric guitars. He was definition of unique.
Amazing to think he did this with a cancer diagnosis. Much respect for him for that!

Very sad and big condolences to those who knew him personally. I feel sad this morning reading what Arlene posted. I played (tried to play a version) of this song this morning at the house. Only the good die young it seems....

This is still such a shock, just learning about his illness. I’m glad he’s not suffering anymore. We lost a great member of the community and also ‘the’ man who blended in Metal! :)

As a person who loves flamenco I enjoy the crazy syncopated falsetas and the complex rhythms but it’s the really simple melodies that often have the most emotional impact. This tune hits that mark for me. It’s beautiful. Ben kicked some ass in this world.

Since Estebanana missed this or did not have much more to add, I will contribute my perspective. Back in 2003 or so, we were on the Flamenco Teacher forum (a precursor to this one) and he would contribute on occasion, revealing that he was very well informed (ie a working professional flamenco guitarist) in addition to his fusion project. I remember him sharing his Halloween gig where Fanny and her friend (top level bailaoras) where dressed as sexy vampires dancing sevillanas with the flametal band backing (Ben on flamenco acoustic electric, and the others in “traditional” metal band setting). I was quite amused, as I had similar ideas more as a joke and never had the guts to actually do such a thing. Perhaps the Halloween situation provided the perfect opportunity to put it into reality? Funny, cool, scary, people are in costume etc…A little while later I heard him doing original compositions and one had Marty Friedman soloing on it…that is when I got jealous of the guy, because not only was he doing a similar idea I had, but instead of a joke, this was serious business. And he was connected to the industry obviously to have one of my old 80’s guitar heroes contribute to his project. The thing is, he and I are of the same generation and “metal tastes” so to speak. My FT forum name at the time was “Racer-X” and he acknowledged that at some point in our online exchanges.

Soon after my introduction to him, Paco’s new album “Cositas Buenas” dropped, and it caused a lot of discussion. Back then there was a huge divide in the community between so-called “Old School” and “modern” approaches to guitar. Someone legitimately questioned Paco using “Tientos” as a traditional palo or song form title on that album, claiming it more like a modern jazzy rumba etc, and I remember clearly, how it was Ben that stepped up in that moment and schooled all of us… “the very first falseta paco plays on that piece is the main cante melody of the traditional palo”. BOOM!! And right there is the thing about flamenco and cante, and the message of the music and the whole thing. You have to understand flamenco at that level. It seems like a simple thing, however it is NOT. Because the cante defines the FORMAL STRUCTURE of all the palos. Ben was the real deal in my eyes.

So fast forward to about 2009. I was hired by Jesus Montoya (Long Beach CA) to do a show in Hollywood. Arriving early to hang out with my friend and mentor, Jesus asked if I knew Ben. He said he had been working with him and even recorded a heavy metal solea….I was so jealous! Ben came over and picked us up and we went out to eat. Ben was called “Ben-ha-meen Bosque” by Jesus’ kid (woods-Forrest or Bosque in Spanish) and it was clear he was part of the family like I was as well. We went to check me into my hotel and I started playing for him my “flamenco metal” ideas and we played back and forth for each other with my guitar. I had the flamenco “Battery” and maybe inspired his version later. It was this time that he was transitioning with his double sided album “Flametal” and “Heavy Mellow”, where instead of the metal band plus acoustic guitar (Jesus Solea was part of that group), he was moving in the direction of arranging metal classics for flamenco guitar solo. In all honesty THAT is the thing that more impressed me of all.

In 2011 he came to my gig in Virginia and I invited him to play with me…we did I am a Viking by Yngwie, something we both had together pretty well. There was a video on facebook someone grabbed but sadly it is long gone. He invited me to my hometown music store clinic he was giving the next day. I drove out there (about an hour from where I live now) and watched his solo performance. I actually got emotional because it reminded me of my father, who was a classical guitarist. I did not do much interms of playing with my dad, but one day we were in this same music store looking at music sheets and books, and he asked me if there was anything I would want to have in that book (an anthology of contemporary pop of the 1991 or so). It was junk of course, but he explained he needed one piece in there to do an arrangement for a wedding/bride request. (He played weddings with a trio of classical guitar, flute and cello as his main gig). I was intrigued so I reexamined the book and lied that I needed to have “a couple pieces in the book” too, so he bought it for like $12. Some time later I asked him about the piece and he showed me how he arranged the melody and the bass line and used harmonics etc. I was like “ok, THAT is what my dad does for a living” and finally understood how cool my dad was. He passed away only a few months after that.

So there I was in the SAME music store watching Ben do the same exact thing with all these deeply ingrained metal classics…bass line, melody tremolo, double kick drums, harmonic squeals…all on a classical guitar. I started crying, I won’t lie. I am sure some folks think that music is silly or a joke to arrange in that format, but not me, I totally got what Ben was doing and it was brilliant.

I got to hang with Ben and Arlene at the NAMM show several times, and he visited my town once again (the picture from an above). We always remained friends, talking music online during the pandemic and I dedicated a Racer-X flamenco version to him which he loved (and so did the actual band that commented on my YouTube video). For me the biggest deal of his career was when Jason Becker lauded his music in Guitar Player magazine, and invited him to record on Jason’s last album. His death is a huge loss to the art world, and me personally.

It seems he stopped selling this album and transferred the tracks to other albums since he gave this one to me. I can’t find the track with Jesus online. I believe it is the track “Solea Arriba” or “Monolith”, where the electric guitar is replacing Jesus’ cante track. Here is the back cover of “flamenco light-Flamenco heavy”, and you can see he was going as “Spanish guitar by Benjamin” at the time.
