Strings for older instruments

I have recently acquired a Manuel Reyes guitar from the late 60s which came with old rusted strings. I have since restring it with Solera Flamencas Concert strings (the medium tension set) and don’t think they really sound right. It feels as though I have to play harder than normal to get the same volume and tones as I do normally.
I have used these same strings on my other flamenco guitars (a Francisco Fernandez cedar blanca from 1977, a Jose Lopez Bellido blanca from 1999 and a 2002 Stephen Hill negra) and the sound I get from them is much more satisfactory.
Is the type or tension of string a factor in older instruments? I suppose as the guitar is over 50 years old, has been played a lot and had a several repairs could also be a factor but any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Some guitars do seem to respond differently to different string tensions but I would have though a medium tension set should be okay. Maybe the Solera set just doesn’t suit this guitar? You could try some low tension strings like Savarez 520B.

The Reyes from this era had smaller bodies, but were good guitars. I remember one which was a favourite of Roman Vicenti. They do not need any special strings. Like any good guitar you have to experiment to find appropriate strings

Thanks for the replies, yes I think a bit of experimentation is required with different brands. Does anybody have experience with Hannabach strings? It is a brand I have never tried but always meant to.

I haven’t used them much. They tend to be higher tension than other brands. I would probably try Knobloch or Savarez first with the Reyes. Even plain old D’addario EJ43 or 45 might work well.

I think I’ll try Savarez next, I used to use the Tomatito set regularly but not sure they are worth the money. It seems that Luthier strings are back too. I have a vague memory of trying a set years ago but don’t remember being blown away by them.

Let us know how you get on. The Savarez 520B are great but they have rectified nylon trebles which are unpolished. If you’ve never used them before they can feel a bit strange at first. I too haven’t been impressed by Luthier but maybe they just don’t suit my guitar.
