Spanisch like song suggestions..

I probably get scorned for asking…but I am looking for 4 flamenco/Spanish like songs we can do for a bday of a friends dad. We tried last week to jam which turned out great (3 guitars, 4 singers, 1 bas) but we only played the usually suspects like Bob Dylan, John Mayer, Roling Stones etc. Great fun. But as I am the only a bit more Spanish/flamenco focused the bulerias and solea where not really adopted… And gypsy kings is great but we need something in English…

So do you have any good suggestions of Spanish sounding sing alongs in English text we could do? I think his das is going to be 85 and he has been loving Spain for the last 65 years or so. But love on the level of 1970’s citch Sangria, Sun and these painted fans with dancing motives…

I am going to get killed for this, but if he is into 1970s Spanish kitsch, he might like these:

RE: Spanisch like song suggestions.. (in reply to Schieper

I would like to suggest a song that is in English with a Spanish lilting melody entitled "Spanish is the Loving Tongue." It is not Spanish kitsch, as in sun, sangria, and painted fans. In fact, it refers to Northern Mexico rather than Spain. It is based on an old poem entitled "A Border Affair," and it has been sung by many, primarily folk singers: Tom Paxton, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Emmylou Harris, and others. It's actually very pretty, and your 85 year old with the birthday might enjoy it.

I have included the lyrics here.

Spanish Is the Loving Tongue

Spanish is the loving tongue,
Soft as music, light as spray.
'Twas a girl I learned it from,
Living down Sonora way.
I don't look much like a lover,
Still I say her love words over.
Often, when I'm all alone,
"Mi amor, mi corazón."

The nights when she knew that I'd ride,
She would listen for my spurs.
Throw that big door open wide,
Raise those laughing eyes of hers.
How my heart would nigh stop beating,
When I hear her tender greeting.
Whispered soft for me alone,
"Mi amor, mi corazón."

The moonlight on the patio,
Old señora nodding near.
Me and Juana talking low
So the Madre couldn't hear.
How the hours would go a-flying,
Till too soon, I'd hear her sighing
In her sorry little tone,
"Mi amor, mi corazón."

I haven't seen her since that night.
I can't cross the line, you know.
I'm wanted for a gambling fight,
And like as not, it's better so.
Still I always sort of missed her
Since that last sad night I kissed her.
Left her heart, but I lost my own,
"Adios, mi corazón."

(Traditional; Adapted by Tom Paxton, 1968)

Bill

I was talking to those others, criticising your English above. I lived in Amsterdam (Lauriergracht & Reguliersgracht) and met Peter (Gerundino) by chance when visiting there later.

Schieper and I have enough history in here that I hope he knows I wasn’t criticizing his English and was just joking around. Funny thing is, my inspiration came from my first teacher, who also is Dutch, and who would always refer to the Spanish Cedar in the shop as “Spinach”.

At any rate, no offence was intended, and the post can be removed if people think it was inappropriate.

*edit* Screw it. Post removed. I’ll be more careful about attempts at humour in the future.

Always liked this song from when I was quite younger when it came out. I still used it many years later to dance my son to sleep holding him in my arms, when he was a baby, along with other hits of those decades. He had to be danced to fall asleep for more than an hour. Now that he is 7 and hears some of those songs he remembers he used to sleep with these. Hope he does not use these songs on romantic evenings later on, in his life and fall accidentally asleep

Awesome stuff people...Thanks a lot. And no offence taken at all RobF and others :-) all good. Apart from being none native English, I am dyslectic and tend to use random letters anyway arroufgble point.

But I learned to take an intellectual looking pose in situations and apply an impressive document format with lengthy list of literature references hence most people assume I write highly academic stuff which looks just to overwhelming to contradict. But having followed all your posts the recent years, it is obvious some of you mastered that skill as well 😊

Where haven't you been Escribano

Thanks Schieper. I wasn’t kidding about my first teacher being Dutch and using “Spinach” as a substitution for “Spanish”. It’s written on every billet of Spanish Cedar in his shop. Up until recently, I thought he was being funny but I’m learning.

If you are playing classic rock stuff you could do this and even give it more of a Rumba vibe.

Bryan Adams has recently released this - Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman? (Classic Version). I don't know what has driven him to record it again with another guitarist.
