Sergio Monroy - Piano flamenco from ...

Hi guys

This guy is playing in London in April and a few other dates in the UK - sounds interesting - anyone heard of him?

http://www.wawagency.com/roster/sergiomonroy/sergiomonroy.htm

(From the website) 'Sergio Monroy has developed a unique synthesis of flamenco and piano music, bringing an incredibly fluid and open style to the piano. His first album has been acclaimed in the new flamenco community for its freshness and accessible wedding of flamenco and jazz. Sergio fuses all the components of flamenco; the guitar, the ‘palmas' and the voice without imitating them bringing all the piano's melodic resources, rhythm and harmony into play.'

Also playing at the La Linea Latin Festival in April are Ojos de Brujo.

'Ojos de Brujo fuse flamenco's driving rhythms with hip-hop, funk, punk and other stray sounds snatched from the Barcelona street.

The group calls this musical mashup 'Jip Jop Flamenkillo', a sound that catapults flamenco into the 21st century without losing any of the power or passion of the music's roots.

Anyone who's heard the Gypsy Kings' brand of rumba catalana - which married traditional flamenco guitars to fiery Latin percussion - will recognize Ojos as the latest installment in flamenco's inclusive ida y vuelta (or 'go and return') tradition of assimilating New World sounds into the repertoire.
'

So, I'm guessing not for flamenco purists but could be worth a look!!!

I hadn't heard of Monroy until recently, but I like the idea of using a piano to play Flamenco. Although I think its quite jazzy, from the audio clips I heard, and perhaps puro Flamenco would sound better? tremolo and picado would be an interesting conversion!

Just thought I'd mention that Eduardo Niebla is playing at the SouthBank (London) in June:

Again, its not gonna appeal to Puro fans... I don't think Eduardo's that bothered about compas. But its worth a look/listen if you're open minded.

Looks interesting! I notice that the Angelo Debarre quartet are playing at Quecumbar again in June, I might try to check them out this time as it was sold out before.

Thanks for letting me know, Jacqueline! I'll have to spread the good news to a few other people who like that sort of thing. If you go, I suspect you'll enjoy that one. Its not quite as subtle as Flamenco, but lots of fun. There are usually plenty of simple 4/4 or 2/4 beats, meaning that its very easy to tap your feet along to and feel the beat, even as a newcomer. Perhaps its more "accessible" than Flamenco too, but still complex and full of virtuosity in places!

Sounds good to me! There is another 'gypsy jazz' guy called Moreno playing there next Sunday, I think I will try and see him too..
'arguably the most exciting guitarist you will ever see, both audibly and visually', according to the website..

Sergio is one of the young guns from Cadiz and a great friend of Miguel Poveda: most of his friends are guitarists, watch out for Keke Baldomero, Oscar Lago and especially Ricardo Rivera. And especially Raúl Galvez al cante.

Sergio is flamenco, moderno perhaps, but not jazz.
