I had dinner with encarna anillo after farruquito concert and she lamented her Chilean boyfriend (pituquete) was struggling to find work despite his talent level. Seems he has made great use of youtube. I am amazed at the treasure trove of wax cylinder recordings I would have struggled to find years ago are all over youtube of ancient Cantes. One video leads you to another discovery. Of course the impact on flamenco, both good and bad, is enormous.

This always reminds me of 2 things:

1) What is true flamenco?

And 2).., some 30 years ago when I was a youngster, there was this instrument shop in our home town. It was run by 3 brothers and clearly had lefts it’s glory days behind. However, they were the to go place for the many brass bands, marching bands and orchestras in my area and also providing instruments for the many swing formations. The store smelled old, the carpets where torn and the selection of instruments always had the shimmer of previous season. Their modern sheet music section was labelled “top 40’s” but “40’s music” would have been a more accurate description.

They came by reasonably well. Hopping on the band wagon of repairing amplifiers for drive-in shows and providing schools with instruments. That sort of stuff. Selling the occasional beginners fender or specific orders for the amateur bands that played at dances in the weekend.

Their father used to be a real local celebrity. Playing in what must have been the 60’s and the 70’s, each weekend on a village festival, a sport event or a wedding, with his party band. I saw a picture ones. Long hair, yellow suite. They played everything that was hot. From Edith Piaf, Elvis, Jonny Cash, and an assortment of regional songs. And the crowd would get up and dance under coloured lights. Bands where busy these days. So many villages, so many dances. That is why I guess he rolled into his music store business that he left his 3 sons.

Few years back, I went there again. And at the first glance surely the store looked like it had not changed since I last was there. The dust on the counters, the outdated selection of keyboards, organs and synthesisers and the empty places against the walls and in the display counters, however, where a clear whisper of the imminent end.

Shortly after that visit, I learned they closed down. Sold the building to a real-estate developer who plans on knocking it down and building high end apartments. They even did not bother to take down their outdated web-site.

Instead of youtube I'd rather say the internet. Youtube is just a part of it.

What do you mean here? It reads like he was struggling because he used youtube a lot.

He was struggling to find work (I hope you understand what “work” means to a flamenco guitarist professional). He only started making youtube videos a few years ago but they seem very popular. He works hard on it to make it look nice and accessible so I feel he put his creative energies there. Most musicians that are not commercial success fall back on teaching to pay the bills, it is pretty normal and for flamenco it is important that the tradition continues via maestros to students. Youtube has opened up a new world for education. And with subscritpion/monetization it works in the favor of musician teachers in a big way.

Depends on the metrics you use to assess success.

As a commerical form of music, flamenco is toast. I can see every single one of the biggest names in modern flamenco live for free iin Andalucia. Or at least you could before virtue signalling selfish covidiots locked us up to avoid protecting others.

On the other hand, I can drunkenly play a solea from a roof terrace in Jerez and have a local sing along. You don't get that with Cardi B.

Not sure the world of music or books can survive against Call of Duty and Amazon-Prime.
