Paco de Malaga

I had to go hunting for a vhs video of my godfather (Regis Ferruzza) who passed away recently...The video was part of an homenaje concert to my Father John Marlow in 1993 who had just passed away a few months before. I had shown a clip of this years ago where I was only 18 playing beside Charlie Byrd. Sorry about the tracking on the VHS tape, it is in bad shape. Anyway, I remembered the very first time I ever saw a flamenco guitarist live was in that concert. Paco apparently knew my father and offered up these two pieces in tribute. He studied guitar with Ramon de Algeciras before Paco de Lucia even played guitar. I was in awe of the right hand technique and it stayed with me for years before I started learning flamenco myself. Enjoy, I know Bill will like these:

Is this a perfect right hand position for playing flamenco?

Only if you want to sound good and feel comfortable playing flamenco.

Ricardo,

Thanks for posting the videos of Paco de Malaga. As you know, Paco is not only a first-rate flamenco guitarist, he is a fine teacher and good friend as well. For years, his wife Ana taught many of the dancers around the Washington area, too. Both are great representatives of Spanish culture in general and flamenco in particular.

Why do you ask? Is there something in that hand position that seems dramatically different from other players you've seen?

I don't know whether it's dramatically different or not. For the last few months I've been studying only Paco's right hand. I've watched mostly videos from the 70's. I've rarely seen Paco's right hand position from the same angle as above. Maybe I should start watching his more recent videos.
