anyone from the US order Leiva books ?

Hi,

I know some of you on this website have ordered flamenco transcriptions from all different websites.

Most of the Leiva transcription books do not seem to be available in the US. I live in NYC (on that note - who else lives in NYC ? - I'm hoping to find some jamming partners after the covid simmers down).

Has anyone ordered from various companies, and can give me some idea of the shipping and customs costs added onto the book prices. And do you save a lot on that by ordering multiple books at once ?

Best,
Joe

We spoke about where to get them, but not the shipping cost for 1 vs. 2 or 3 books...and I was thinking perhaps some websites ship for lower rates than others ?

Anyway - I have 2 books in my cart right now with $40 shipping charges - if I found someone else nearby in NYC interested in ordering , we could save 1/2 on the shipping charges, and I might have a new jamming partner that is also a PDL fanatic.

Not sure about you guys - but I've found it really, really hard to find a jamming partner at my level. I'm usually much better than the typical player I meet, but not nearly good enough to play with the advanced guys - that might be another interesting thread.

In 2018 I ordered two books from deflamenco and only paid 20.00 for shipping. I just received the Fuente book and paid 30.00 for the one book shipped to San Francisco. As far as jamming partners I think flamenco guitar is so personal it’s difficult to find two players on the same level with the same interests. I’ve played with many guitarists over the years but never found a person who wanted to study the same stuff or whose playing really complimented mine and vice versa. Back in 1988 I started trying to form a band and wanted another flamenco guitarist. I never found the right person. Eventually in 1992 I partnered with a Latin rock player and the band was very successful. It just turned out to be very different than what I planned.

I have used deflamenco in the past, and elflamencovive more in recent years.

One thing I have done is to put a couple of things in the basket and get the shipping estimate, then add or subtract items and see how the shipping goes up or down. There is often a threshold where, eg. 1 item $x, 2 items still $x but 3 items goes up to $2x, then add another still $2x but add a 5th goes to $3x.

Also sometimes it looks like one site is cheaper for the item/s you want, but their shipping is more expensive, so might be worth trying to put the same things in the basket of more than one site to compare.

I don't know this serie and the author. I saw that David Leiva made a serie on Cante accompaniment. Is that any good? I'm interested.

I have a few of David Leiva's dvds. I'm sure Ricardo could enlighten, but the positives are: shows chords and has a clock face timer in the picture, you can add or subtract cante, guitar, etc., shows parts of the piece.
IMO Leiva is knowledgeable, and has certain technique, but plays with his brain and not his heart, which I guess means good technique, sometimes questionable execution. For instance, YoYo Ma is an amazing musician, and has done wonders for classical music and fusion. BUT, IMO when he is playing non classical music, he almost swings, but not quite, which can detract from the piece.
But it's great to see Leiva's dvd with chords and a clock and a counter, telling you what point the song is at (intro, llamada, etc.)
Just my two cents worth!
