Hello from Oakland, California USA

Hi,
I have been reading the forum posts for some time, but finally registered.

I play guitar to accompany my singing of folk music. I bought my first Flamenca Negra by accident, but I'm so glad I did because it's my favorite style of guitar now, and I'll never go back to steel (apart from the odd occasion).

I found the guitar when I was looking for a used classical to practice on, because I don't like how practicing on steel string injured the nerves in my fingertips, and I heard nylon is a good way to practice until the skin is tougher.

So I bought a neglected guitar on craigslist. I could see an old spanish label in the ad so I thought it might be worth checking out. The back is cracked, as well as other repairs needed, but it sounded good when I tuned it up. No wonder, because it turns out to be an all solid wood negra made in Valencia, Spain in the 70s.

Now steel seems a bit cold and boring sounding to me. With nylon guitar I find the sound is much more alive than steel, it has more soul and depth. And similarly to my ears the sound of a Flamenco Negra is more vibrant than a Classical.

I'm grateful for my lucky accident.

Welcome !
I grew up in LA but lived a good part of my life in Santa Cruz, worked “over the hill “ sheetmetal workers local 102 but doing lots of higher tech stuff vie the Silicon Valley, flew sailplanes just outside of Oakland at a place now long gone..., made my way up to Alaska where I might be the only trying to learn Flamenco, I’m learning to build guitars too. I lurked around tre foro for a while before signing up. Played guitar badly most of my life, studied classical and music theory as a young man...
Can get a little rough here but a good group with a variety of experience from all over the world.

HR

Although English, I worked for Apple in San Jose/Cupertino and know Santa Cruz quite well and Oakland a little bit. So, welcome Accidentally. I am currently in my blues guitar phase, it comes and goes. I like older guitars.

No-one was much interested for the effort of posting. I'll think about it.

Thanks for the welcome Hernandez, Escribano, Piwin, and Mark!

Cool to hear Hernandez, I lived in SC for a while too, so I know the windy route over the Santa Cruz mountains from San Jose very well, having driven it many times, as well as traveling by bus. I had to look up what a sailplane is - that looks like a lot of fun!

Interesting to hear about your lonely Flamenco and luthery in Alaska, but the scenery must be unmatched. And I imagine many other people are isolated with their specialized guitar interest in their small towns etc across the continental US, at least to me it seems.

Escribano, phases indeed! I'm British by ancestry (with the exception of one German great great grandfather), and more importantly my mother versed me in the ways of the culture. Much could be said on the riches found therein, but were I to begin exposition on that, I fear I would not know where to stop. I can share that I find it necessary to watch British television. Failure to do so results in hull breach and catastrophic failure.
Apple is a unique company. My friend who is a visual artist recently tried to upgrade from her iPad (which she uses as a digital drawing device) to a much more expensive "Japanese" and found the fancy new widget couldn't hold a candle to the functionality and ease of use of the Apple.

Mark, I love SF, that was where my mother and I first landed when we moved to the Bay. We lived right on the edge of the Great Western Highway, on the third floor, with a direct view of the ocean (well the dunes mostly but the no buildings between us and the water) on La Playa street in the Sunset District. The wind was so fierce it blew our sliding windows in, and so cold it killed a potted conifer on our deck, but it was an atmospheric place and a block from Golden Gate Park, and within walking distance of the Presidio. Fond memories.

Interesting! I worked for Apple in Cupertino, had a short stint in Fremont. Left in 1993.
