Help me buy a guitar?

Hello!

First post here. I'm looking for advice from people who know about flamenco guitars...

I've been playing a Ramirez FL2 for 20 years that is a very nice instrument. I'm playing a little more seriously now and looking to upgrade to a better guitar, one for life really. I'd imagine that would be a luthier made guitar? My budget stretches to just about £4000 but ideally I'd like to spend a lot less. What is your advice? Should I buy second hand? Are there luthiers building now that are great value?

Many thanks

Welcome to the Foro.

I think the best advice, at least that I can give, is to take some time to read the Foro for a while. There are going to be stock replies to your request with recommendations for a selection of resident makers, and they are all good and worthy. Stephen Eden is a maker who resides in the UK, for example. But, really, the Foro contains a wealth of information, and spending two weeks to a month reading through the General, Lutherie, and Product Review sections isn’t an unreasonable amount of time to allot to background research. Then you can go out shopping with the ability to make an informed decision.

The Foro also contains a classified section. Often guitars based in the UK will pop up there. There is a search function, as well, that can be used as an aid to your research.

Good luck with your search. You have enough funds to acquire a very nice guitar, and it’s an opportune time to also learn about them, which should only make the process more enjoyable.

I looked up the Fl2 and that looks like a proper guitar already. A guitar for life for many :-)

So either top builds of the famouse brands or indeed luthier build. Anyway; that is a great budget to go shopping..

Sorry man, but you need to go to a shop and try. Not other wat around that I think.

+1 for Stephen Eden if you're in the UK but yeah...the world is your oyster in that price range, especially if you buy used.

You can buy some very nice instruments in this price range as the very experienced and always helpful members advised.

If it is difficult to travel (even short trips) during this period with the general situation, you can buy online from the well known shops (like mundoflamenco in Germany, lasonanta in Holland, soleraflamenca in Spain etc. where they have a great selection and can help you deciding if you tell them what you are looking for.

For example, if you send an email to mundoflamenco saying that I have this guitar (in particular Ramirez fl2) but now I need, lets say, an easier, or lighter, or a concert grade fuller sounding guitar, specifically a negra or a blanca etc. He can suggest the guitar that is right for you and in your price range. If you buy from these shops you are sure you are getting a genuine guitar and not a ghost (guitar that has a known label but is a cheap instrument) and above all you can always give the guitar back if you are not fully satisfied and get your money back to buy another from them or an entirely different shop.

All these said I will suggest the amazing Vassilis Lazarides guitar once again because I have one and I am more than satisfied with it. It is in your price range and it is his highest concert instrument and not an estudio one that you get from the most well known luthiers at this price range.

Wish you a happy searching!

Hi, thanks everyone for the replies.

I have spent a while reading the forums, makes my head spin a bit. Yeah the FL2 is lovely, It's served me well for 20 years.

First time I've heard of / seen Stephen Eden, he looks like a great option. I will also send some emails to those places and check out Vassilis Lazarides.

Diolch!
