what do you use to clean your files?

I have some good files dedicated strictly for instruments, especially some small width files for nut/saddle work. I have a brass and a slightly stiffer steel brush I clean the files with after use. I'm noticing some kind of buildup in areas and the brass/steel brushes will not loosen it. how do you clean your files?
thank you
d

A file card will do the job - even on my finest files I'll use for detail work. You can find them at many (most?) hardware stores.

As Tony says, but before the card, I use a piece of copper to go over the teeth. This gets rid of all sorts of crud. The copper forms to the teeth of the file. The card after this will get rid of any loose mess.

Thanks, Flamingrae, I now have stuff to try with 1982 and older US pennies!
