template help

does anyone know a good method of creating a mold template piece from only having a full top template.

I basically have a santos hernandez top template form Madinter and need to flip the edge so i have a template to run my router on form making my mold.

I belieive in casting and molding its known as a positive and negative edge.

obvs if I run a router around the SH template side.... I just get that edge again.

but I need the inversion of that edge.

Tried building clay around the side which i hoped would be good for one pass on the router to get a wooden copy but it looks like its cracking when it is drying.

Any ideas?
whats the usual way youd get that negative side template??

ps. Ignore the mdf template in that pic. Its a different shape.

I think you're referring to an outside mold or partial outside mold? Honestly I would just trace the template and then band saw/file/scrape/sand to the line. Assuming you have access to a band saw.

Ha! Thanks Andy.

Beat me to it. I woke up this morning with the word bandsaw in my head! Thats def the way. think I was over thinking things. Beginner syndrome.

I dont have one as of today but I've been browsing them the last few days online so gonna buy tody!

Ps the gaps visible between template and side mold piece arent there now. sanding nearer the centre line closed those gaps

Thanks Andy.

This is the result.

Bandsaw> spindle sand> hand sand.

Fairly painless. was a prototype but very happy with the result. May try again as theres a couple of areas its not exactly perfect.

Nice! I was going to recommend a spindle sander but didn't want to give you another tool to worry about buying if you didn't have one already

well, I dont really have one but I do have the bits to go in a drill. So I used them in my router table.

Learning a decent lesson on that way.

A routers top speed is too fast for such a task!! silly me. -1 Spindle sander bit!

Lowest speed worked like a charm.
