Oscar Herrero latest CD - review

Got OH latest CD "Abantos" and if I have to summarize it in one word I would say it boring. To elaborate in two words "very boring".

This CD comes with a nice idea, it is actually a set of two CDs, the first one has the compositions played with a full ensemble (cante, precussion, etc.) and the 2nd CD has the same compositions in a solo guitar interpretation.

I really liked his first two CDs (Torrente and Hechizo, Torrente being the better of the two). However, the best way to describe this one is it lacks soul. The playing is too technical in my taste with no feeling, no excitement, no aire. While OH takes care to make each note come out with exceptional clarity, its just too technical. Its like he paid attention to the mechanics of generating the sound but not to the feeling of the composition.

That summarizes my impression of this CD.

Interesting. That's pretty much how I felt about Hechizo as well. I'm glad it wasn't just my relatively uninformed opinion and someone else found his recordings to lack a "certain something". Where as I appreciate his videos as learning aids (especially so in absence of any teacher), I can at least also appreciate that they are technical exercises and little else.

Mind you, that's just my opinion and mileage may vary.

i have hechizo and torrente and i didnt find them "boring".

Perhaps you had a typo or misused the word sole. Sole is the bottom of your foot or shoe.

Then we have Filet of Sole – a fish. Maybe this CD stinks like an old fish!

Personally, I dislike that which is technically perfect and lacks feeling. A simple piece played with feeling is certainly to my preference. I am not at all impressed positively by any technical wizardry from any one.

But then the general audience may well be greatly impressed with fast, loud playing with lots of glitzy lights, and other distractions! CD's are made to make a profit. Not everyone will like a CD for one reason or another.

Marketability is very important. If a knowledgeable group dislikes an artists offering then that artist had better have aimed for the general public and its lack of taste or understanding!

So the music has no feeling, and is very boring? Thanks for telling me, I will not buy it.

Oh but wait, Henry says it is NOT boring. So which is it? Does the music have any feeling, or doesn't it? Does Herrero display a new level of technical wizardry aimed at selling tons of CD's to teenage girls?

I guess I will just have to listen to it, and find out for MYSELF.

Henry stated he has his first CDs (Hechizo and Torrente) and found those to be not boring, which is something I also said in my original post. So there is no argument between me and hery regarding his first two CDs.

I stated I found his recent album boring, which is a dissapointment considering how much I liked his first two CDs.

If you are aluding to the fact that its rarely possible to take the word of a review, I'm with you on that. I merely shared my personal oppinion and anyone else might have a different oppinion.
