Ramón Montoya on video

Paco Peña recently pointed out to me that there actually exists a minuscule clip of Ramón Montoya on video, in a 1938 film of Imperio Argentina’s: he is playing with Carlos — they both have hair!

Here are two YouTube clips. The first appears to be a shorter version of the second, (starting at about five minutes into the latter, and showing the close-up of Ramón sooner).

Thanks Paul.
I enjoyed it a lot. Interesting to see how they made movies in that time.
After the dumb movies or the movies with mo sound (sorry, I do not know the proper english word for that) what a spectacular event it must be for people to watch this in the cinema....

Very cool, Paul. Thanks for posting. It hooked me into wanting to watch the entire film, and not just for Ramon Montoya. It looks interesting, and her singing was great. I wonder if the entire film exists in some format?

Hi Bill,

I found it here : https://ok.ru/videoembed/95010884336

The pccine tag disappears after 3 minutes, so it is not too bad. The scene shown in the excerpts above is from approx. 12:00 in the film. There might be other scenes showing the Montoyas; I have not watched the film.

Another copy, without the tag, is at https://vk.com/video_ext.php?oid=371450&id=171507000&hash=c0b66621c261b266&hd=2 but at the price of a free registration.

Nice find.

It looks as if Ramon's nephew Carlos Montoya is the second guitarist.

I seem to remember Paco Pena playing the melody of La Chiquita Piconera as a bulerias falseta.

This discovery was first made by Estela and we had an excited convo a while back:

http://www.foroflamenco.com/tm.asp?m=255925&mpage=1&p=&tmode=1&smode=1&key=ramon%2Cmontoya%2C1938

Also the picado buleria that copies the melody she sings was first done by Sabicas (though himself stole some N. Ricardo stuff in the same buleria so I allow that possibility as well).

If you read through some great info from Carlos Montoya’s relative even, I notice even YOU Paul commented.

Thanks much, Paul, for the video. Not too many of us hold the guitar anymore like the Montoyas of that day. Many years after buying my first flamenco guitar from Carlos, I met him at the World's Fair in Knoxville, Tn, 1982. I was there playing banjo in the "folk life" section, and attended an evening solo concert by Carlos. We met afterwards and chatted briefly in his dressing room; his wife Sally was especially cordial and conversational. That concert and meeting were the highlights of my three weeks at the fair. Thanks, again

Wow, so I did! Memory starts failing when you get to my age, what can I say?

Was anyone able to access the full film at one of the links above? They seem to work for me.
