So, castanets

Fiddling about with some recording at home and fancy adding a bit of a castanet track...... The sound I'm after is what wu-tang clan did with songs like 'wu tang clan ain't nothing to f### with' (easily found youtube etc). I suspect they have sampled it rather than using real castanets? Anyone know if there are particular ones would directly give this muted sound (I know zero about them, but suspect most have the normal higher pitched fast clacking.

My local guitar center has some ‘castenet’s that are main stream Meinl or LP brand that don’t sound as shrill to me as those used by dancers. The Wutang clan probably used something like that and just messed with the levels of the sample to their liking.

The wu-tang song is sampled from executioners from shaolin and the sound effects guys likely were slapping two pieces of bamboo together. Plus, in the song it’s slowed way down.

Interesting - led me on a leftfield google search and found bamboo castanets...

Useful. Found this one of him where the sound is pretty close to what I'm after.....

Also seen some attach-to-a-cajon types which appeal from an ease of use perspective.
