Soleá and lutherie

Hey all, I shot this video of me playing my Soleá and working in the shop. Wasn't sure where to put it but please enjoy!

I did enjoy that! Only gripe is that I don't like fade-outs ...
Keep up the great work/playing

No close reflections / frequency build-up or cancelling. A pristine recording. Possibly the best take I heard from you, while the guitar leaves nothing to be desired.

And I admire once again how you manage staying in shape with both disciplines simultaneously.

A nice feature and very welcome while the foro is going slow, currently.
Rock on, Andy!

Una guitarra muy flamenca. ¡Me gusta! I like the deep bass with controlled, dry sustain.

@edguerin Thanks! I know what you mean...I just decided to do the fade-out because I had that repeating falseta at the end...going off into infinity you know

@Ruphus Thanks amigo! I recorded it with my Tascam DR-40 and shot all the video with my iPhone. It's pretty cool what you can do on a budget these days.

@Escribano Muchas gracias!

I see at least three camera angles that appear to be in synch, did you use three iPhones?

Thanks Lenador!

@Escribano I actually had to record myself playing the same piece three different times from three different angles, then pretty much hope they would all line up with the audio track I was using. Turns out iMovie saved me, because on some of the takes I was playing 2-3% faster, but I was able to slow down the clips to the correct tempo.

Absolutely!
Even the convertor issue has been solved very well without costing thousands of bucks per channel. Before my gear was boxed, gathering dust now, everyone was spending big bucks on outboard gear to fight the brittleness.

Now, as I read just days ago, even some of the top audio folks have entirely gone into the box.
And your little recorder appears to be doing pretty well even just with its onboard mics. I read from someone who used to schlepp gear around for capturing chamber music. Then for back up he got the DR-40 and discovered that he could leave his rig at home. He even scratched ambience mics.
-

For instant jobs I have a Korg MR1000 since the times when it was released. Pretty nifty with good mics hooked on it.
-

The only positive development is the one of science and technology. It is outright breathtaking.
I remember wishing for a humble tracking device in the late seventies, but couldn´t effort it. Something of the versatility and clarity like with a laptop and a DR40 would had far surpassed anything I used to dream of.

Clean guitar, clean playing, and a clean shop, that's quite a hat trick!
You keep a rug in your shop all the time or was that just for the video?

@heyjamesguesswhat I picked that rug up a few years ago, just like having it there for some reason...

Olé, Andy. It is lonely work sometimes (soleá from soledad?).

Doesn't anyone besides me use a flush trimming router bit for trimming the back and soundboard to the sides?

Thanks, Ethan. I actually hadn't put that together as far as the loneliness aspect (Soleá is just my favorite palo) but you're definitely right.
I think I just feel a little more in my element with hand tools, at least for the easy stuff. I'm certainly glad I have the router for cutting binding/purfling channels though.

Great guitar, playing, and beard. Have you ever tried a Gramil(sp?) for the binding channels?

Nice guitar, nice playing, sweet recording!

Was the Romanillos headstock a special request, or your own initiative?

Solitude: In 1991 I visited Vicente Camacho in Madrid. He is the only disciple of Modesto Borreguero I know about. Borreguero was the third of the famous oficiales of Manuel Ramirez. (The other two were Domingo Esteso and Santos Hernandez.)

I asked Camacho whether he had apprentices or children who followed him in the craft.

He replied, "No tengo ni discípulo ni nadie. Trabajo aquí solo, como San Jose."

["I have neither apprentice, nor anyone. I work here alone like Saint Joseph."]

Joseph, the father of Jesus, was a carpenter. There is a tradition that he worked alone after his sons took to the road as itinerant preachers.

Camacho said it with a smile, but it seemed a bit wistful.

Thanks Jason! I have used a gramil for finishing the binding channels close to the guitar body (now I do it all with a razor saw and chisels). It works fine but I haven't tried it on the whole guitar...

Thanks Richard! I actually don't think I had seen that Romanillos headstock design when I designed my guitar #1. They are pretty similar but thankfully not exactly the same
Regarding loneliness, I'm just glad I can take advantage of one technology that didn't exist in Jesus's time: podcasts

I always love videos of your playing and look forward to new videos with each new guitar.

Just to provide a bit of constructive criticism from a spectator who has watched way too many promotional video's point of view, if indeed this is meant to be somewhat promotional, I would make it seem like you are playing the guitar that is being built (video shows negra or classical being built, but blanca played), and I would show more clips of the build process instead of the playing.

Hope this helps and is not taken the wrong way. Thanks, again, for all your wonderful work and videos!

RE: Soleá and lutherie (in reply to Andy Culpepper

@yourwhathurts69 much appreciated! I guess it is intended to be somewhat promotional but the idea was to highlight the music more than anything else. I think that's a great idea of making a video showing the building of a guitar and the same guitar being played. That would take much more planning and forethought, though, and I'm woefully impatient when I get an artistic idea in my head. I will have to do that some time though.

Andy,

After my consideration of the Poncho Navarro flamenco guitar, at about the same retail price as your flamenco model, I have to say that you are running a tight race, comparatively speaking, with his quality. I really don't know how you can compete with your New York life style. It seems this is self defeating unless you get some help

Be careful not to wear yourself out, Amigo.

RE: Soleá and lutherie (in reply to Andy Culpepper

Hi Tom,
I appreciate the concern and the kind words, but my lifestyle is in fact very relaxed. I live in a rural area with about 1/4 of the living expenses of a place like New York City. My work schedule is also on the European side as I have trouble spending more than 6-7 hours a day in the shop without getting burned out. I'm super lucky to have time to enjoy all the good things in life; family, friends, guitar etc.
