Pepe Fernandez/ Solera Los Angeles

A free masterclass and a free performance with Pepe Fernandez. Looks like Solera are opening a branch in Los Angeles.

Yup! All over that!
Not sure why solera would open a store in LA, commercial rent is insane.....not complaining, just surprised.

I suppose there are 2 good reasons.
The first one is that it’s a good idea to have a shop in the USA if many of your customers live in USA. As a matter of fact in USA it’s easier to find amateur players willing to spend good money for a top rate flamenco guitar than in Europe. I saw it many times.
People are diffident for intercontinental shipping and hidden douane costs and a shop in USA can boost your business.

Second good reason is that some guitars are more sought after in USA than in Spain: Old Ramirez, De la Chica, Arcangel etc.
The idea is to find them in the 2nd hand market in Spain and sell them in USA.
In Spain the influence of Paco drove the taste of the people towards a different kind of guitar.
In USA, the fascination for Sabicas, Escudero etc. and the influence of people like the Romeros or Brune contributed to drive the general consensus for the old style flamenco guitar. In Spain everybody knows about Esteso and very few about Barbero.

I get having a base in the U.S. but I imagine the majority of their sales are online and that being the case why not choose a cheaper city?

Pepe is a BEAST! It’s so fluid and effortless sounding.
He was very cool and very patient with everyone and now I’ve got material for months.
We got 3 bulerias falsetas, 2 solea falsetas, and 2 tarantos falsetas pls he did some cante accompaniment stuff with Jose Cortes.
Thanks Solera for making it happen and big thanks to Pepe!
Also, ran into a familiar face at the show last night. :)

I shot this at NAMM Friday afternoon....there was an obnoxious ukelele to my right, a hard bashing steel string to my left, and a funky electric bass behind me, so I couldn’t hear much....however the cel camera mic shot-gunned it’s way through the NAMM noise. I played the guitar right after Pepe finished playing. The guitar was punchy like a good sanchis, not what I consider a top concert guitar. I don’t know what strings they were but kind of dull trebles. I couldn’t hear myself at all when trying it, Pepe was miked with a lavalier and I was right in front of the little speaker they had for him. He plays great of course...NAMM is not the best place to try an acoustic instrument for sure.

Videos came out pretty good. I find myself too distracted by his playing than the guitar but I can definitely tell the guitar doesn't sound like the Barba he plays in the Solera videos.

Wish I saw this earlier, would definitely have gone to that as its a few hours drive.
Its great that they are opening a shop here, its sorely needed but the interest in Flamenco here is extremely limited.
Hopefully they will have more events like this, I need to check more often.
