Custom cases in Europe?

So I got myself a new guitar, but due to its somewhat bigger dimensions there aren't a lot of cases that fit. I'm having a Hiscox case right now which does fit in the lower bout (which is about 390mm wide, 96mm deep), but the pegs are pushing against the cushion of the headstock area. I don't want to close the case shut all the time because that would mean pushing the pegs into the case's inner lining and exerting a lot of pressure on the neck/headstock. Feel like I have no other choice but to go custom..

I've been looking around on the market and the only custom case I know about here in Europe is Accord, but they're too expensive and seem to be too rigid/not padded enough. I'd love to get a Hoffee case but they're expensive as well + taxes + customs. There is one dealer in Germany but he sells them for about 1,5k EUR. Do any of you know of a big enough case that accomodates pegs/custom made cases in Europe?

Jalal,

I use this case: https://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_concert_guitar_case_fiber_wh.htm?ref=search_rslt_classical+guitar+case_215938_5

They fit my Lester Devoe guitars with pegs perfectly.

Suerte!

Cue Michael Jackson karaoke music:

Everyday I sit and ask myself
How'd that Devoe slip away
Something whispers in my ear and says

You are not alone
For I don't have one too (sshhh. singing here. shut up grammar nazis)
It seems so far away
I'll never be able to pay

repeat chorus with fade out effect.

The Thomann case looks very much like the Cibeles which came with my Anders Eliasson 660mm peghead,
(See story here) and which fits fine.
They´re using different fittings now (my case is from 2008):
see here

But shouldn‘t Merlin Grote be able to help?

thanks marco, but my guitar has a lower bout of 390mm (aka phat ass) and wouldn't fit into the thomann case, just like it didn't fit into a visesnut case. :(

ahahahaha piwin if you post a video of you karaoke'ing this song I'll treat you a drink when we meet how much do the devoes clock in at right now?

Ed, i've talked to merlin and he's looking around right now, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask here as well. He's interested in the cases Johannes Inhoffen from Mundo Flamenco used to sell (which I believe were the Cibeles right?) and he knows a guy in Poland who produces custom cases made of plywood and leather with a zipper. If Cibeles makes phat ass n pegs cases i'd look into them. thank you

Perhaps try a case made for an OM style steel string guitar? The lower bout on your guitar is in that range.

Why are the dimensions of your guitar so different from the usual dimensions? Is that what you wanted on purpose or did he make the guitar like that because he has a template that he needs to follow?

RE: Custom cases in Europe? (in reply to jalalkun

good idea rob, om style guitar cases might be an option. but my guitar doesn't have that deep of a lower bout like an om, a mere 96mm. e.g. the visesnut om case hase a box depth of over 120mm and i don't want to stuff things under my guitar cuz this would fail the cushioning purpose of the inner linings.

ramooz, merlin has a variety of plantillas, but I chose this plantilla of his for its bigger dimensions. I'm 6'2 tall and have long limbs, a standard 370mm lower bout guitar just feels like a chicken wing in my hand and is really uncomfortable and weird to hold. this guitar feels really substantial while holding her, I can rest my right arm on the guitar with a lot more ease, my hand falls into position a lot more naturally and I don't need to hunch my back anymore to check my right/left hand movements.

Mirrors are your friend. Especially if you're practicing something where you need to check your hands, that's really the best way to go.

jalakun, I have a guitar similar in depth as yours with real pegs and it fits in a case with the brand name Guardian. the guitar fits well within the case (no extra padding to fill it out). the case is made in china so it is probably available around the world

Howdy!

Here's a good option: http://www.visesnutcase.com/

I've been using it now for a year and it's quite good. It's really really light but it's strong like iron. You can jump on it, you can use it in the airplane, you can almost shoot to it and it will stay unharmed.

It's quite new case and it's mainly designed for professional musicians who travel a lot. That's why it's also quite expensive. I payed something like 800€ for it. BUT in the end you can be relax with that case because it's really so strong.

Also on important thing which might help you is that you can fix the size of the case inside the case. There are couple of places where you tighten or loose certain places inside the case and you can use it for a smaller or bigger guitar. REALLY good possibility.

RE: Custom cases in Europe? (in reply to jalalkun

I sympathise with you. I also bought a Hiscox case for a peghead and found that two of the pegs touched the wedge-shape bit of the rigid foam that projects into the head area. I had decided that the best way to deal with this would be to strip back part of the case lining and shave a small bit off the foam. I think that I could have done this without compromising the strength of the case. I didn’t do it in the end as a found a second hand early prototype VGV de-luxe snakeskin case that fitted perfectly. I love VGV cases (now available as Alhambra brand) but the latest ones have a large sloping interior compartment that doesn’t work for my pegheads.

Hiscox cases are good value and tough. You used to be able to get extra stick-on internal pads for them. Have you considered modification?

VGV (Alhambra) are the most beautiful with the arrowhead shape on the top. Even Paco was seduced into buying one. They are not too expensive.

Finally, if you case ends up costing more than the guitar, consider buying a new guitar that fits a standard reasonably priced case!
Good luck!

I concur, it’s great and fits every guitar plantilla that I own. I use it with the rain bag that zips over top, it keeps the humidity in too. I played at the booth at NAMM and learned they have cheaper($600) and fancier ($1500) models than mine.

I store my best guitar In it at home of course, but any guitar I travel with I use this case so I sort of wish I could afford one for each guitar in my collection ....

I've got a couple of Visesnut cases which I really like. I've had flight cases since the ponderous Mark Leaf and the Royer, back in the 1970s, and I have a couple of the Karura carbon fiber ones. The Visesnuts are as strong as any of them, maybe stronger, and notably lighter.

Here's a page from Visesnut's site listing dimensions of the three sizes they make.

http://12215510215.com/visesnutcase/Guitar-case-dimensions2.pdf

Looks like maybe the 000/OM size might work.

Apparently it didn't fit.

As I said... the old Gipsy kings Córdoba fits (thin body) so I don’t understand how 96mm body depth is too shallow. But that’s cool he can get a custom job it’s all good.

As I said, it's not possible with the standard visesnut case unfortunately. I actually ordered one and it didn't fit. the lower bout is too wide for the classical and too shallow for the OM case.

and Rob#2: don't worry, it wasn't an inexpensive guitar. that's why I'm thinking about investing in a hoffee case if there isn't a good alternative here in Europe

Nice thread. I was thinking of getting a better flight case. Could anyone here shed some light on the Visesnut Active series vs. the Premier series? Particularly on why there's a $200+ price difference? Is the Active series as strong as the pricier siblings?

the active series - because of its more rigid shell - is more scratch and dent resistant but less shock absorbant, the premier series is scratched more easily but has a better shock absorption. that's my understanding of the cases. i'd get a premier case over an active case, shock absorption seems more important than scratch resistance. and it's either way ridiculously rigid.

oh yeah depending on the choice of colors + amount locks the case gets more pricy accordingly. active series always has 4 locks.

I'm not Ricardo, but I have some experience with guitars and airlines. I have nearly 2-million miles on one of my frequent flyer cards, and a few hundred thousand on a couple of others.

My '67 Ramirez blanca has hundreds of thousands of airline miles on it, mostly in a Mark Leaf case. I vaguely recollect a photo of Ricardo's Hauser in one. This case is no longer made. It is very thick fiberglass and foam, very heavily padded. It is extremely heavy. It doesn't travel any more. My "collector's item" classical lives in it at home, since it has the best humidity seal of the cases I own. The Ramirez traveled extensively in a Reuer case as well, also no longer made. It's a little lighter, but still quite heavy. The foam padding in it has degenerated into a nasty black goop, so it's no longer in use.

Two expensive guitars made the trip from Hawaii to Austin via UPS. They flew as checked baggage in Karura carbon fiber cases, with covers, from an island in the Central Pacific to Hawaii. I felt confident, since I knew the head of baggage handling at the departure airport, and watched as the guitars were loaded. At Honlulu the guitars in the Karuras and covers were packed into thick tri-wall cardboard guitar cartons.

I have never had a guitar damaged by an airline, or when shipped, but it does happen. The occurrences I have learned about didn't happen in the airline hold. Most of the guitars were damaged by being dropped a fair distance onto a hard surface, in an inadequate case. But even the best cases might not defend against being driven over by a vehicle like the tractors that pull the baggage wagons, or especially a refueling truck.

I would trust the Visesnut cases at least as well as the Karuras, which have a very good reputation.

But the best solution for peace of mind, if you can afford it, is to buy a first class ticket. You will then be assured of carrying the guitar on board yourself, and stowing it in the overhead compartment--that is, if your flight is not on some of the smaller commuter planes.

Otherwise, you are forced to take some risk. Even with the airline policies allowing musicians to carry their instruments on board, you may be denied the privilege if the flight is full and the overhead compartments are expected to fill up.

In my opinion the greatest risks to the guitar happen during its trips from check-in to the airplane hold, and its return to baggage claim. A good case like the Visesnut will protect the guitar from normal handling--it's when something goes wrong that the damage occurs.

In all my travels the worst damage I have had to checked baggage was when the handle was ripped off an otherwise stout hard sided suitcase. Of course, on its first flight, any hard sided luggage will get scratched up, so if you are at risk of checking your guitar, use a case cover.

The Ramirez went walkabout only once, ending up in Saipan instead of Guam. It was soon found, and arrived at Guam before sundown the same day. My father gave his custom made Purdy shotgun to my son, shipping it air freight from Corpus Christi on the Texas coast to Austin. It took nearly a week to find it after it went astray.

In addition to nicks, gouges and scratches, the Mark Leaf case has a large dark red stain on it. I have no idea what it is, but when asked I say, "That's from the guy who tried to steal it."

Thanks Richard for your informative post.
On inner-European flights most airlines won't let you bring the guitar aboard. Buying an extra seat or flying 1st class (I'm not even sure they'd let me use the overhead bin here) isn't really an option for me.
So I guess I might just have to take the risk ...
The guitar I'd take would be my Anders Eliasson blanca, which while emotionally of some value, certainly doesn't compare with a vintage Ramirez as far as the monetary value is concerned

Ed, a couple of (at least) European airlines do allow taking your guitar as hand luggage into the aircraft if you put it into a soft case. I went to Turkey via Germanwings and I took my guitar with me. Was not a problem.
There's a manufacturer who produces actually quite nice leather and plywood cases, albeit with a zipper. have a look here: http://www.benedykt-art-case.com/
I'm thinking about custom fitting one of these for my Grote guitar...I think for just running around/driving in a car and maybe hand luggage on a plane such a case would be more than enough.

And thanks Richard, that's some very valuable information you're sharing.

Since this was Texas to Texas air freight I have no doubt in my mind that the pilot borrowed the shotgun to bag some ducks or scare armadillo at his ranch, then put the gun in its case back in the airport baggage room.

I vaguely recollect a photo of Ricardo's Hauser in one.

My dad spray painted it silver in our driveway (for years we had the outline in the driveway lol) so it would reflect sunlight. It looked like a top secret weapon he carried around and people always asked about it. Again, there are simple latches on it that could open easily like the VISESNUT cases....that is only thing that makes me uncomfortable about travel without a zipper type thing. TSA pryed open an unlocked microphone case I had in my luggage and the latches were permanently damaged, so it has given me a phobia about guitar cases and such. Zippers are easy to open and close for dumb rednecks at TSA, and also tend to hold humidity in better (Incase of low temp in the cargo hold).

VISESNUT survived several flights already (again I use the rain cover at all times) including overhead bin, gate check item (pink tag) and baggage claim (both normal conveyer belt and oversized items it has been sent through). The only other case I travel with is an Italian VGV that is closed by a single latch and two zippers. That is the case that ended up having the Sanchis headstock snap off twice due to impact...although that guitar had a design flaw in that the headstock is angle backward much more sharply than normal guitars like Ramirez conde etc, and second, it was never properly glued, being held on by the veneered face plate and the two E strings pulling. So not the best example of the failure being the CASE and baggage handling only.

My only horror story was I had to check in my main A26 conde for a long flight to Las Vegas....the case was the normal conde case at the time. The temp was so cold in cargo that when I opened the guitar in Vegas, the humidity was so high the guitar glazed over and took on a mute sound (like an ice cold beverage glass outside on a hot summer day). It took at least a full day for the guitar to dry out and return to normal. That was very depressing and scary experience.

I will say for connecting flights that might go international....make sure to book plenty of layover time between flights if you have a guitar....one time my family traveling to nicaragua, they gate check my guitar for connection to Miami...however the guitar was sent through baggage claim, so I had to EXIT the connections area, collect the guitar at baggage, then go through security and long lines etc almost missing my connection that the rest of my family was already boarded on....very stressful ****.

Yeah, I know. E.g. Eurowings do; but Lufthansa doesn't. So it depends a lot on wherefrom and whereto you're flying...
