How to win an argument with an Irishman

I had an argument about whiskey with an Irishman, he said the Scots can't make a damned whiskey. So said neither can the Irish, ..." and besides you fools can only make five brands, The Scots," I said "are like artists who use many colors etc....." I expounded on the variations of taste within the envelope of Scotch whiskey and told him the subtle differences between peaty Islays and the lighter upper lands whiskies were for deft palettes to explore and enjoy. Then he said "Bulllsh*T, we make five kinds because once you get it right why keep f$$king with it? To further insult him I began naming off US brands of cheap Bourbon and saying look these taste horrible and they are Irish whiskey's ! He was not in on my joke and said mate you don't know anything about whiskey. And I said "Yeah, but you're still gonna drink that I.W. Harper crap and I'm gonna buy an esoteric bottle of Islay. " His reply was "You should just stick to guitars, in that realm you actually know something."

See this is how you win an argument with an Irishman, you let him think you lost and then he complements you on another of your skills to keep you from feeling bad for being beaten so badly in the argument. It's V for Victory if an American can coax an Irishman into saying the American does at least one thing correctly.

Due to my brother, we had always whiskey in the house. Not top shelf boutique maybe, but highly revered makes of larger brands.
So, I used to think that acrid whiskey was for masochists, until coming to taste the mildness of 12 year old Tullamore Dew. For me it is Irish over scotch anytime, though able of appreciating Jack Daniels too.

Having said that, useless to even think about such from where a single bottle of original discounter stuff comes you in for a whole month´s worker´s wage. (Dealers say, most being consumed out of all by draconic towel head authorities. As if phoney wasn´t classic for moralists anyay.)

Fireball is what the little girls drink around here. I heard it was banned in Canada or something.

I was born a stone’s throw from the River Bush, which was a great salmon and trout fishery until the Government took control. On its banks is the great Bushmills distillery which makes a wonderful whisky called Black Bush. Since I have caught salmon and trout in the river, I try always to have Black Bush in my house.

There are other great Irish whiskies, such as Jameson´s Redbreast. Powers used to be great too, but they have changed the recipe and now it is just another generic drink.

But any Irishman who could sit before a turf fire at 4 in the morning in the West of Ireland, after a fine meal, share stories about the day´s trout fishing and make plans for the fishing tomorrow, with a bottle of Lagavullin on the table, would never criticize the great whiskies of Scotland. I suppose that Highland Park would be my personal choice, but there are many.

The smokey, antiseptic flavor of scotch has always kind of put me off but I’m warming up to that flavor via drinking more mezcal. Generally though I’ll always go Irish whiskey.
Pretty sure if I tried that tactic on my Irish grandfather he woulda smacked me.
He was a hard SOB, watched him cut two fingers off with a table saw, tape them back on with electrical tape, then make a pot of coffee while he waited for my grandma to come back with the car to take him to the hospital. He lost the fingers lol

In Oaxaca last Christmas we were served many free samples of mescal. We paid for a few shots. Back in the USA I bought a couple of bottles, drank them.

It used to be in Mexico that you bought mescal if you couldn't afford tequila. Now it's fashionable in the USA, or at least in Austin.

Over the years the tequila manufacturers have put together a set of regulations and got them passed into law. Not that I believe every bottle of tequila sold in the USA adheres strictly to those laws, but I think they have had considerable effect.

Is there a comparable set of regulations for mescal, or is it "every man for himself, and the Devil take the hindmost?"

The two bottles of mescal I drank were $35-$40. Upon due consideration, I think I could have duplicated them with grain alcohol, water, some artificial smoke flavor, and maybe a little sugar. They had none of the old-time funkiness when you could buy what was almost Mexican moonshine--mostly in Mexico, not so much in the USA.

In the wintertime I drink various highland single malts, Hennessy or Martell VSOP, Perrier chaser.

You probably would not have had much in common with W.C. Fields, who among his many "bon mots" once said:

"A woman drove me to drink, and I didn't even have the decency to thank her."

Haha, I was about 6 years old, it definitely shocked me at the time!

It's getting very trendy here in LA also. It's kind of grown with the sudden interest in Oaxacan food so now there's Oaxacan restaurants with 30+ types of Mezcal(not all Oaxacan) some as high as $50 a shot. It's still a little smokey for me but I am warming up to it. I went to a Mezcal tasting a year or two ago that really opened my eyes to the wide range of tastes and flavor profiles.
