RE: Share you guitar related injurie... (in reply to rogeliocan

Ricardo,

My problem is two years of reinjuring some type of soft tissue between my spine and shoulder blade. I have taken advil and it goes away for a few hours, but it does not cure the injury. I can take advil every day and I have for periods of time, but I stopped because I was advised by a doctor to stay away from it.

There have been six to eight weeks on end where I wake up and pop 800 milligrams of advil and start marching. If the problem has not gone away after that advil does not seem to be the cure. I can toss back 800 milligrams and still feel pain. That said yah if I am in super pain I will grab some and it helps, but it's not the cure for this situation.

THat's cool....my point is you will be surprised at the exp dates in a batch. Go to different stores, and finally get the freshest batch...it does make a difference. I am surprised when I see "exp 01/13" and behind it is a bottle that says "exp 04/15". Big difference, I have found, in it's effect. And those dates are not made up, they are actually expecting to keep that stuff on the shelf for 3 years. My bottle I bought a while ago and rarely use (cuz it's so effective in one dose anyway), says 04/15....so if you ever take any make sure it's younger than that at least.

RE: Share you guitar related injurie... (in reply to estebanana

I just found some advil that is marked 7/15- the smaller 24 pill boxes have more turn over in the store I go to, I found dates between 2/13 and 7-15. most 4/14 on bigger boxes.

There is a two year and half difference between 2/13 and 7/15...

If I take these young potent advils and get high off my ass and crash my router I'm holding you responsible.

Well at least your back won't hurt as bad.

RE: Share you guitar related injurie... (in reply to estebanana

Just read into this thread.

Rogeliocan,

If your pain is bound to permanent muscular strain in the lower back ( which would be very common ) pushing receptors of the annular muscle belt connceted to the pubic bone will do wonders.
Maybe someone who knows of biokinematics ( possibly your chiro ) can follow the hint ( and also show you how to push at the pubic bone yourself when in acute need ).

Again, provided a very common muscular issue, just as common exercises for lower back should help you primarily. Like lying on your belly and pulling weight with your lower legs ( towards your butt ) - you can use that elastic band for it -, or having someon sitting on your legs while you pushing up your upper body on a table.

Start out in moderate measure. Work smoothly without sudden moves and don´t cross the treshold of pain.

Stephen,

From what I read chances are that your problem is based on common inbalance as well. Which means that the front flexors are being in superiority to the backs extensors.

It would be a bit difficult for me to try describe the optimal isometrical exercise to you, so here in simpler dynamic ways:

Exercises for prolonging big and small breast muscles should be what you need. Keep in mind however: Prolonging.

Which means that you need to work in the weak outer range of the muscles instead of in the optimal power range.
Hence, for the bigger breast muscles: Lay with your back on bench with weights in your hands, opening your arms T-wise as fully as you can ( arms bending backwards below bench hight ) and work from there.
For small muscles same procedure only not T-wise, but instead of rectangular from your bodys central line, at a 45° angle.

Do this every second day ( one day rest for new muscle tissue to build up / have muscle prolonged ).

After ~ 2 weeks when you see significant build up of strength in the weak ( fully extended ) range, start caring for the anatgonists ( the muscle group that must be actually troubling you ).

For that do push-ups.
Alter exercises daily.
Ergo:
One day breast flexing, one day push-ups.

All the best!

I hate taking ibuprofen, Advil, etc... it all makes me break out
in hives.

I have found that simple exercise, stretching, disciplined sitting
position, and proper warm ups can really keep you pretty safe.

Your biggest enemy is yourself, thinking it cant happen to you.
And not doing anything preemptive. Address it right now.
Stretch, exercise, do all those things. You will not like what happens
if you dont. Trust me! :)

Always good to hear your thoughts. I think a lot of Bach sounds very good on guitar, but maybe not as good as the intended instruments. I have a feeling you won't like Philip Hii's version of the Toccata and Fugue--although what a performance! I feel lucky to play an instrument that can encompass both the idiomatic flourishes and percussive arsenal of flamenco but can also play cello, violin and organ transcriptions. What an amazing thing!

Couple of weeks ago, i was wrestling around with my 3 year old son, and broke my third finger on the left hand.

I mangled it pretty bad. Will likely need surgery depending on how
xrays look this monday. I dont expect full recovery, but i hope i'll be able to play well enough to keep teaching at least, since that is my main source of income. I managed to find one of the best hand specialists on the U.S. east coast who happens to be in my area,so that was a plus.

I did have an issue with my right hand in 2012, but it was misdiagnosed as tenosynivitis. It turned out to be a systemic issue, Gout. It never came back after that one episode.

I'll come back in a couple of months and report on how things pan out.

Sorry to hear that Todd. I say this will be nothing but a good story and occasional stiffness on cold days in a years time.
Julian Bream broke a finger shovelling snow one year and continued to record and tour for over thirty years.

Not trying to minimize just reminding you that where there is a will there is a way.

Hope you enjoy a few months playing Django style till things sort themselves out.

All the best.

Damn! Jose my Bolivian buddy that you know broke a bunch of fingers last year (car airbag) and they had to put pins in behind the knuckles through the joints so they heal proper. He didn't have insurance so they yanked em out after two weeks! They are a little crooked but he got back to playing three months later and doing fine nowadays.

Yeah, the Doc said they may do the pins. I'll find out Monday.

Anything can happen. Trying not to speculate too much.

Thanks for the support guys! Say some finger straightening prayers for me. :)

Some injuries take so long to heal because you don't give the affected area enough rest (especially true for joints).

RE: Share you guitar related injurie... (in reply to estebanana

If only I knew 20 years ago what I know now. I would have avoided 90% of all that ailments that I have suffered. I am naturally stiff. It is the unfortunate consequence of being born strong. (If I had wanted to be a body builder I would have been bigger than Schwarzenegger.)

If I do not stretch then the muscles exert a permanent pull on the tendons. This causes aches and pains. Another unfortunate consequence of stiff muscles is that they pull the joints into unwanted positions. For example my chest muscles pulled the shoulder blades forwards, causing a bad posture that resulted in pain in the neck. All I had to do was to stretch!

Of course this only applies to stiff people like myself.

Another thing that has helped me is osteopathy. I can not recommend it enought! 6 months ago I suffered from terrible back pain. It was caused by a nerve being trapped in the spine. Some of my vertabrae had become dislocated. The osteopath pulled them into place and the improvement was immediate. I did have to have several treatments, but I got better after each one! Now I feel better than before! I now suspect that something in my spine has been dislocated a little bit for years, and that I had just gotten used to being a little uncomfortable.

Osteopaths are similar to chiropractors. I am not sure exactly what the difference is, but I can only recommend everyone to go and see one. Even if you think that there is nothing wrong. You may be surprised to find that your usual state is one of slight discomfort.

Chiropractors use machines and can cause immense damage, in my experience. Osteopaths just manipulate with their hands and can work wonders.

I am also big and rather stiff. My posture is poor from using a computer 12 hours a day. My neck can cause problems breathing and interfere with my heart rate.

Get well soon, Todd.

Broke left hand's ulnar styloid process and a break below it, the pain has been constant and now only at 10 month point it's getting better. What helped me was chelated magnesium(the powder) and calcium pills, magnesium seems to be important for the absorbtion of calcium.

These kind of things make one take precautions when possible, bad luck can be found anywhere, any time

Todd, wishing quick recovery.

My right upper extremity ulnar nerve entrapment (cubital tunnel syndrome) at the elbow continues to bother me. Now I can't play more than 30 minutes before the numbness makes my right A and pinky fingers clumsy and hard to use. Oh well...

That's great news!

@Escribano I think at this point is safe to say that chiropraxy is woo and osteopathy is somewhere on the fringe, with studies suggesting some good results on some things it claims to do but also suggesting that it might have no effect at all on other things. I've personally had some good results in the past with osteopathy.

However, I would just add that it's not because they "just manipulate with their hands" that they can't cause harm. Six years ago I walked into the office of a highly reputed osteopath for a minor problem in the upper neck. I walked out with severe tinnitus and that has been with me ever since, 24/7, to the point where I ended up having to get therapy to learn how to cope with it. And I don't just mean a small bout of ringing here and there, I mean loud enough that "real life" sounds seemed to be just faint background noises, loud enough to make sleep an almost impossible achievement. Since little is known about what causes tinnitus, I can't point to the osteopath and say he did anything wrong. All I know is that I walked into that office with no tinnitus at all, and I came out with a severe chronic case of it. Anyways, this isn't to dismiss all of osteopathy. I'm particularly fond of their "holistic" approach to certain things and yes in some cases it can work wonders. But it's more invasive than many people say and, as anything I suppose, it can be harmful. On the bright side, I can now cheat and act like I have perfect pitch. I don't of course, but I always have that reference "note" ringing in my head so I can find any note by comparing to it. Perfect relative pitch I guess

Sorry to hear of your experience with osteopathy. I have been harmed by a chiropractor and sorted out by an osteopath.

Nah it's got its advantages. My ability to hear is very much like my ability to understand and speak Spanish. Works pretty well until something comes up that I don't want to deal with.
-Caballero, no me oye? No puede marcharse. Si no tiene Multi por el metro, hay que pagar la multa.
- Kay? No nintendo nada. Soy bus can doe the tourista office.
-La multa! Hay que pagar!
- Sorry. No hear-o. Tinnitus. Niiiiii. No oy go.

Fungus

My nails are pure worthless without serious reinforcement. Even kept at a small length they sound thin like you were using a really thin pick. Anyhow I think I picked it up by going to the gym or washing dishes. I'm glad to say I refrain from both activities these days. I was prescribed really toxic medication but due to a some mix-up in my insurance I never took it. So I would soak my nail in mouthwash and walked around with a green finger for a few days until I got some whitening mouthwash. In between LONG soaks in the mouthwash I would put tea tree oil on it. After about three months it was completely gone.
