Vicente Carrillo Guitars? are they a... 
What up guys, i just got in a Vicente Carillo Alegrias negra and got a good deal on it : ) Just want to know if he has a good reputation as a guitar maker? i know the is sort of mainstream maker and puts out a lot of instruments a month and is based off of Spain. I you guys could let me know if his guitars are any good? thanks

So you bought a guitar of his and now want to know if his guitars are any good? Shouldn't you have done your research and asked those questions beforehand. What's the point now? if you like the guitar play the guitar.

i played some of his guitars at the musikmesse in frankfurt this year. they have a good bite to them, but are they bang for the buck? I don't know for sure. didn't have an awful lot of time at hand and the fair was quite noisy. what about your guitar? are you satisfied with its sound/playability? cuz at the end of the day that's all that matters post pictures/videos so we can have a look at it.

I had a blanca back in 2003. It was a nice guitar, very pretty, and other people always like to play it. The only problem with it was that the neck was a little wider than normal and it kind of hurt my wrist to play it. I wonder if those guitars bear any resemblance to what he makes nowadays.

Thanks for the Reply guys, so i got a Alegria's Negra for 1200 and it originally goes for 2500 so got it for less than half the price : )

But any how, the guitar is built.....very well, the rosette is nice and the back and sides line up exactly. It does have some good weight to the guitar and more than my other flamencos and classical. It is a little bit more Bassier than my other guitars but still nice to play. It is supposed to be a flamenco but you can definitely play some classical tunes with it.

Just wanted to know more about his work process. I have seen a few vids of him making these guitars and he works...really fast!! how many guitars of these does he put out a month? what kind of Workshop category does he fall into? Artisan Work shop or Production workshop?

I played one a few times that was for sale here. I think it was a 1A. It was heavy for a flamenco and as Miguel said the neck was wide and hard to play with my smaller hands.
It was super loud I really liked that but not my cup of tea.

Yeah i did notice the heaviness for one and the wide neck also. It is more Bass sounding but it is very loud and find that you can play classical and flamenco on it. I compared it to my Francisco Navarro Concert flamenco and this one has more tables with the flamenco buzz to it, it is much lighter than the Carillo for sure but i do like the look of the carrillo over my Navarro.

The build quality of the Carrillo is very good though, everything lines up very well.

Carrillo is a pretty respected builder.
In the past he made some “Paco de Lucia” guitars. In a kind of cooperation with, if I remember good,the brother of Paco de Lucia
Also he gave (or still give) guitarbuild workshops in the summer.
Think you have a very good deal here.

Many pro-players play on Carrillo guitars nowadays (Josemi Carmona, Canizares, El Niño Josele play on Carrillo regularly) and most notably Paco de Lucia recorded "cositas buenas" with a Carrillo blanca model Paco de Lucia.
The top line models are powerful Conde style guitars and the general consensus is that they are good guitars.
Carrillo varnished the top of the famous '76 Conde of Paco and after that Paco wanted him as the maker of the guitars branded Paco de Lucia. A little shock for someone.
As a consequence of the favour of Paco, at the time you could see Carrillo guitars everywhere...Pepe Habichuela, Tomatito just to name a couple of big names. It’s funny to see that also the flamenco players seem to follow the trend of the moment...

Yeah, funny to see how they follow the trend of the moment (the Master himself), but very funny also to see how they all ended up selling their Carrillo through Solera almost at the same time last year. Pepe Habichuela, Antonio Sánchez (Paco's nephew who was playing with him in concerts with that guitar), Carmona, Antonio Rey, Diego del Morao (two Carrillo guitars sold: a Blanca and a Negra), they all had their Carrillo sold through the mentioned shop. Only Cañizares remains faithful to Carrillo who personally built his guitar following his own specs. You can see it here:





Cañizares has mainly been playing classical Spanish music for the past few years and the Carrillo seems fit for the job although you will notice it lacks that 'concert grandeur' others have. Great guitar to play both flamenco and classical music, a real crossover instrument.

You’re right. I think Diego del Morao, Pepe Habichuela and Antonio Rey sold their Carillos within some months time.
The same happened with some RSC guitars at different stage...

I had a blanca, and it didn't have a bassy sound. The craftsmanship was flawless--impressive for $2K. Even at that time, I think it was known that he had a little factory and didn't do it all himself, right?

I also had a Navarro negra for a couple of years. It played a lot better and was more comfortable, but it didn't project as well and its A string was too loud. But I did sell it and try to buy it back 5 years later. :)

In 2009 I had Vicente Carrillo make me a flamenca negra to my specs as a 1A. I wanted a negra and requested that the back and sides be made of Madagascar Rosewood. It sounded very good and was very well made. As others have noted, it was a bit on the heavy side, but that did not detract from my enjoyment in playing it. After three years, however, I decided I wanted blancas only for playing flamenco and sold it.

I think you got your Carrillo for a very good price, and if you enjoy playing it consider that you got a fine guitar for a good deal.

Right. Tomatito got rid of both his 1998 1F Extra Sanchis Carpio and 2006 RSC Negra whereas Chicuelo sold his 2010 Hermanos Sanchis López 1F Extra and Tito Losada his 2010 RSC, all the same year. Sadly enough Tomatito's Brasilian Rosewood 2006 RSC was ruined by its careless new owner... It had appeared some time ago in a YT video where he was casually playing at home in Almería...


Miguel de Maria: I visited both his former workshop in the centre of the village and the new one that is now situated in la Avenida del Convento at the entrance of Casasimarro. He employs several people who are specialized in building/assembling different parts of the guitars which are later personally finished by Vicente (strings, adjustments and so on). Here you can see him with Cañizares adjusting some parts of a guitar which all in all was built/assembled in the same way as the rest of the production.

Back then he had a workshop with two old guys preparing materials for him, bending sides and so on. Since 2007 he moved to a larger premises and hired 5 luthiers who still work for him. They are a nice bunch.

I have both a Carrillo 2006 Blanca and a 2014 cross-braced Blanca. The former is more like a Conde the latter is more like a Reyes. Carrillo can build anything, and his staff are all highly skilled Luthiers. He holds guitars in a manner that reminds me of a mid-wife holding a baby!

I have owned several 1A Carrillo flamencos and they have all been great guitars. The Alegrias guitar is considered a 2A student level guitar. I have never played one but I would imagine they are a good guitar for the price.

I recently picked up a couple of Estudio Mongoy classical guitars and have been blown away by the quality and price. I also own an Herencia model and consider it to be one of the best classical guitars I have ever played.

Does anyone have feelings about the recent production of VC guitars AKA Pasión Flamenco?

I suspect the greats who sold they Carrillo guitars through Solera Flamenca (all at about the same moment) sold this particular model though it was supposed to be far better than the previous versions...

Judging by this video though I have to admit they are still great guitars. QUESTION to the sound engineers: can the reverb amplify the qualities of the guitar?
