bad golpeador

Since we're building double top guitars lately we decided that it might be a good idea to increase the size and thickness of the golpeador. Double tops have an outer lamination of 1mm or less so are very susceptible to damage from golpes that miss the the protective plastic. We bought some oversize golpeadores from "strings by mail" which are also thicker than our normal 11 mil ones. On the first guitar we tried the new golpeador on it did not adhere properly leaving noticeable spots around the border which would not stick down. On top of that a couple of our clients who saw the enlarged golpeador didn't like the way it looked so we decided to remove it and put on our normal golpeador. That's where the problem occurred. I can normally remove a golpeador in no more than 15 minutes using naphtha to dissolve the glue. When I tried our normal procedure on the this golpeador I found that the naphtha had almost no effect on the glue. It took about an hour to remove the golpeador and the adhesive was left on the top of the guitar. 3 1/2 hours later I finally had the last of the glue off the top. Naphtha softens the glue slightly and applying heat via heat gun allowed me to SLOWLY remove the remaining glue. I will never use this product again and will dispose of the remaining three. I post this as a caution for anyone considering one of these golpeadores. I suspect the adhesive is some kind of silicon and is a nightmare to remove. I tried several different solvents and nothing worked although naphtha did soften it a little bit.

John--

All of my experiences removing golpeadors have been like yours. Those are the only kind I know--other than gluing on Mylar with white glue, and unfortunately the Mylar I purchased arrived very scratched. What is your "normal" golpeador?

. Well if you have patience to read through this thread, you can see how I learned to deal with these golpeadores and got my removal and replacement time down from two days to 1.5 hours!

The ones I normally use are a 3m product (8" x 8") which I buy from a photographic and printing supplies vendor. They cost a little over a dollar each but you have to buy 100 or more. The glue dissolves easily in naphtha and the glue cleanup takes no more than a few minutes with a soft cloth and naphtha. I've used these since the late 80's with no problems.

Those sound great. Can you give any more details, such as product number? (The self-stick backing on the other ones is also a 3M product: 3M 467MP.)

Sorry Ethan, I bought them through a printing rep who has contacts that I'm not aware of. When I contact him to get some more (should do this soon) I'll let you know and maybe we can split an order.
