Tax, Duty, etc on guitars sent to th...

Hi all,

Has anyone recently been sent a guitar in the UK (i.e from US or Europe)
Were you asked to pay tax, duty, VAT, etc?
Or any of the luthiers here who have sent guitars to the UK and know of their clients' experience!

Thanks in advance,
A

You pay tax and VAT. Shipping charges are also subject to VAT.

You can get advice from many specialist websites such as

https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=13&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjs0vvssMDWAhVMBMAKHa6CBh8QFghcMAw&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.shippo.co.uk%2Ffaqs%2Fwhat-duties-and-taxes-will-i-have-to-pay%2F&usg=AFQjCNGPD52jVkoiX5JdgY7qG2Alt0Xdbw

or better still look at the official government site

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/importing-goods-from-outside-the-eu

At the moment we're still part of the customs union!
so anything imported from elsewhere in the EU, should already have VAT paid at source, and there's no import duty.

outside of the EU, you'll have to pay VAT/duty/handling fees etc

Thanks for the information gentlemen.
So, at this rate it's best to stick with the luthiers in the EU (for as long as we are in the EU!) or purchase in the UK.

Thanks again,
A
