I like the way he plays guitar but wish he would get a haircut. I agree wholeheartedly on favoring cante over toque.

I prefer the guitar. I like the guitar. I play the guitar.

The guitar is cool. I enjoy it. I like singing too.

But not as much as the guitar.

I prefer the guitar, but I've rarely warmed that much to guitar-centric albums. The singing balances it out and if nothing else adds a natural break between falsettas.

Having said that, I Saw Tomatito in Cologne 6 months ago - I forget who the singer he had with him was, but he had IMO a weak voice and didn't particularly ring my bell.

I prefer aubergines to peppers, but that doesn't mean I don't like peppers, on the contrary, I actually like both aubergines and peppers, but I do prefer aubergines...

As long as we all agree that baile comes last

@mark indigo
Have you ever tried Granada-style fried-aubergine with honey? That and a cold beer on a summer afternoon looking over to the Alhambra. That's the life.
I think that recipe is also a cross-over from North-African culture. So I hear, I've only ever had that recipe in Spain though.

Nothing is more offensive than bad cante. I would also prefer fantastic guitar to mediocre cante. Ideally both should be high quality. Ragging on good modern guitar solo has gotten really tiresome over the years. For sure OLD cante was better than it has become.

I have, I think I had some in Ronda. I really like aubergines all sorts of ways, stewed in olive oil, moussaka, baba ganoush, pisto manchego, brinjal bhaji, ratatouille

Note: several of these dishes also include peppers, I really like peppers too

"good modern guitar"

I've always thought that was a non sequitur

Grilled aubergine made in Crete with halloumi is personal favourite. Much as I like Spanish food, I have to vote Greek on this. With a few peppers of course.

Peppers win when it comes to flamenco names though. Pimientito works great. But Berenjenito?

Maybe in other styles of music? DJ O-berGeen? Lil' eggplant?

Does anyone else think half of the beauty of flamenco singing is in the words? I find it hard to understand though, just when I thought learning to speak with the fast talking Andalucians was enough. I don't think beauty of cante is in the musicality of it.

I speak pidgen-Spanish so struggle. I remember doing a bit of a double take when I first watched Saura's Flamenco DVD with subtitles - innuendo overload.

Realizing now I've never heard that word! There's really no eggplant in Mexican cooking.....

I'm actually 180 from this, generally the actual letras are lost on me. I really just love the way it sounds, I don't care that they're singing about forgotten parsley from the market.

Same for me. It's very much like grand opera, understanding the libretto can ruin the effect.

Wellll. In Fandangos it is fairly important, as in a joke; the last line says everything.

But when Mijitas de Jerez sings a letra about being dead and buried and the worms are eating his entrails, you cannot deny that it adds a certain flavour to la soleá

There are definitely letras that I love, think are very cool and identify with but good lyrics are not a requirement for me by long shot. How it's sung is a lot more important to me.

For example

My Spaniard Facebook friends were having a field day about the toque and cante here at 38:00. Vallejo and Manolo de huelva must be spinnin in their graves.

Dude,
Don't be such a hater! Didn't you hear all the cante aficionados going crazy at 40:00? The resolution...was so utterly profound. Really! All this elitist attitude...

The video description on YouTube says:
"Rodaje exclusivo por parte de "El Leñador", del concierto COMPLETO de 46 minutos ofrecido por la cantaora catalana "Rosalía"; y uno de nuestros grandes referente de toda la vida para "Leñador Films" TV como es el MAESTRO: "Raül Férnandez - Refree""

Leñador, explain yourself!!! You claim to live in LA and be a cante afficionado and now we find out you own a film company promoting bad cante in Barcelona!! What gives man?!

Halfway watching it "on foro" the video suddenly stopped playing and for a moment i thought either youtube or the foro threw in the towel. But the savior turned out to be Piwin posting above post at that very moment :-).

Hahahahaha, oh man, I'm busted. Figured that'd be too bad for anyone I know to watch! Lol

Didn't watch the rest but the guitar playing at 38:00 was making me crazy too.....

Skimmed through, I think the guitarist completely out bads her bad cante. It's just unlistenable, is it some sort of Catalan music or something???
