Diego Del Morao 2nd solo album? 
Does anybody know anything about a second CD from Diego Del Morao? His first was Orate, seven years ago now. Has anyone heard anything about a follow-up?

It looks to me he is already working on his next album, although I suspect Diego will take a couple years to record it.

The falsetas on that album were about a decade old or more. I first saw him perform in 1999, and he was way ahead of his time. I think some flamenco guitar fans need to understand that flamenco guitar players tend to etch their music in stone. It's extremely rare that some one like PDL comes along reinventing himself every couple years. In fact he was the only one. Of course some artists can make fans happy by re recording the same basic ideas over and over as Gerardo and Vicente and tomatito have done, and folks are happy with that. I am not expecting any new things from anybody on the seen today to be honest. Sabicas played the same stuff for almost half a century!

Lo que sí que te digo es que este disco que acabo de firmar me lo voy a currar, y no solo porque es una multinacional la que está apostando por mí, sino porque me lo debo a mí mismo. El Tío Isidro Muñoz me decía eso, siempre estaba detrás de mí porque conocía mi dejadez, yo lo respetaba muchísimo y escuchaba todo lo que me decía. Siempre estaba “voy a coger una vara y verás”, porque él quería que yo me dedicara a la guitarra en serio, que fuera concertista. Yo le decía, tito, es que yo así vivo bien y estoy tranquilo. Y él respondía, ¿pero tú sabes lo que es morirse sin saber hasta dónde podría haber llegado uno? Quizá ahora me esté tomando ya mi carrera más en serio.

El disco no está ni pensado siquiera, es solo una firma en un contrato, lo cual implica muchísima responsabilidad y trabajo duro a partir de hoy. No tiene título ni nada, lo único que pretendo es divertir, habrá colaboraciones seguro, y habrá cante, por supuesto; y algo que marca la diferencia con lo que he hecho hasta ahora es que voy a tener mi propio estudio en casa, lo que te permite que te pille la inspiración en el lugar apropiado para trabajar.

I'm not sure he was expecting Diegos next album to be a reinvention or any ground breaking new stuff. Seems he just wanted to know about a whether a new disc was coming. I'm sure, like me, he'd be happy with more of the same..... Although to be fair there were only a few really good tracks on orate.

I absolutley love Orate. I was expecting to be disappointed given Moraito is my all-time favorite. But Diego has his own sound and I like the songwriting aspect of Orate - it isn't just a load of showy-offy-guitar.

The Directo en el Circulo Flamenco de Madrid live album with Antonio Reyes is a good'un too.

Exactly Stu! I'd be generally happy with Orate 2... I think it's exciting to see where players are at a given point in time. Sometimes it's quite fresh, sometimes less so, but as long as it's honest, I'm always very happy to hear it. It's exciting to see what a great player feels they have to say (disregarding albums that are less of an artist's voice and more of a guess at what a larger audience will want to buy). As long as Del Morao's new album is *his* voice and not a capitulation to popularity or label pressure, I'll be extremely pleased.

Doesn't Vicente do that too? And usually gets grilled for his trouble.

Good point. Tierra's exploration of Gaelic influences definitely seemed pretty interesting and novel. I hadn't read about the project before the CD was released so I was surprised to hear it. Poeta was very different when it came out as well. I suppose quite a few musicians have used orchestra, Sanlucar, Morente, etc, but Poeta seemed quite different to me when it came out. I love that record.

Stil to me most Vicente records very much feel like Vicente being Vicente and obviously if you ad gaelic musicians or an orchestra that gives it a different flavor. When i had to arrange a self composed Bulerias for my final exam ensemble playing my father (who was a very experienced arranger) came up with a fabulous counter bass line that totally changed the mood of the piece. He also came up with a "raga" kind of compas variation which gave the piece new impulses at exactly the right moment allowing "compas free" improvisations over 1 chord. The raga sound of that underlaying chord triggered me to make sure the added bass line imitated a tampura during that part of the piece (a kind of citar adding open string bourdon/drone tones on top of a raga). So other persons influences can be a great inspiration and highly change the sound of a piece.

Poeta happens to be one of my favorite Vicente records as well. Tino recently revealed to me it was orchestrated by Leo Brouwer who lived in Cordoba for 10 years as a conductor of the local orchestra. Leo Brouwer also helped Sanlucar making arrangements of his work. Speaking about Sanlucar, Tauromagia to me is one of those very rare and unique records (and stylistic breaks) but as far as i know he only managed to do so once in his life. As far as i can judge Paco de Lucia is indeed one of a kind when it comes to "reinventing" oneself every couple of years.

I guess my point is more that once all the toques have been demonstrated, which might take 2 or 3 full albums, most players have said it all artisitically in flamenco guitar genre. Along with accomp for a GOOD singer, the complete flamenco guitarist will have demonstrated his or her contribution to the art, and should not be otherwise obligated to make a studio recording statement. Vicente, despite what you guys might feel, pretty much said it all by Ciudad de las Ideas, with even here a couple rehashed ideas. Poeta had TWO "pieces", or lets say falsetas since one had singing and rehashed falsetas too, that were new, and the rest was just orchestra around his previous ideas. The result of the music experience with the poetry and lyrics is nice and dramatic, but basically the idea that was done with PDL's music on Duende, that being a fleshing out of the guitar falsetas for small string ensemble. As a statement of creativity it is nothing but fluff compared to his solo album nor his work with Pele and Jose Merce. I feel he said it all back then, and his projects since, enjoyable or not so much, are not really "new".

As we follow our favorite players live performances on youtube, and with the advent of the new state of the recording industry, I don't see a big excitement anymore about ANYBODY'S anticipated studio recordings. I would say I am more interested in any new artists that might appear to be honest. I give a possible exception to Antonio Rey, but this is more based on live concerts as his last two studio efforts were quite similar. Again, I feel his style is now set in stone he just hasn't laid it all down on tape yet.

As a preliminary remark, I think that Vicente is the best flamenco guitarist around today, possibly together with Gerardo Nunez.
He defined a style quite different from Paco's and very identifiable, maybe be even too much.
In this sense, I agree with Ricardo that it seems like he said it all. Even the new album, no matter how nice, sounded as Vicente's.
In these days I like to listen to Jesus Guerrero or Josemi Carmona.

I love Jesus Guerrero! Here's a great clip of him playing (more or less) Café Noir at Solera Flamenca. I'm sure most have already seen this, but I love this version of the song even better than the album version. He has more attack, and repeats some of the falsetas that I particularly enjoy. Fantastic player.

Hey all! I posted this offer in another topic but no luck so far, so I thought I'd post here as well just because it's related to Del Morao.

If anyone has a mint copy of "Orate" that they could be persuaded to part with for €150, let me know. My copy is in bad shape and I want a pristine one but of course it's been out of print for a while now (and as a digipak, used copies tend to be pretty ratty because they're just fragile to begin with). I've scoured todocoleccion.net and eBay and all the different Amazon marketplaces and every Flamenco shop I know of but no luck.

Anyway, thanks for reading! In the meantime I'll be looking forward to his new material :-) Cheers everyone and have a great weekend!
